were vintage gold anodized pickguards clear coated?

Post by SWFC68 » Mon Sep 17, 2018 3:21 pm

I'm working on a JM parts project and I have a Tonegard gold anodized pickguard which is a fairly pale/champagne shade of gold compared to some of the vintage reference images I've been finding. Were the old anodized guards clear coated from the factory? I've seen a few with varying shades of gold; is that the yellowed clear coat?

Wait, what!!! You have a toneguard pickguard? Congrats! I hear those are hard to acquire :) ;D

As far as I know, the originals was indeed clear coated. But dont go trusting images online on how a goldguard looks, its difficult to get the right color when you photograph them, was on the hunt a couple of years back and thought I managed to get a champagne looking one but when it turned up it, it looked more apple juice or champagne on the way out...

Thanks for the info! I know what you mean about the apple juice color. They seem all over the place color wise when i look online and TBH I've never actually seen a real vintage one in the flesh.
I didn't realize the Toneguards were hard to find. I stumbled across it about a year ago and it's been sitting in a box ever since...
