Did vintage Jag prices JUST jump up a few grand?!
I've been checking vintage Jag prices off and on for years, and I seem to remember that semi-recently (within the last year or so), mid-60's Jags in decent shape, usually in CAR, were hovering somewhere around the $4k range. I did a quick Reverb search today for the first time in a few months, and the front page of results is COVERED in mid-60's CAR jags in the $6-7k range.
Am I getting some kind of skewed sample by chance, or is this a trend anyone else has noticed?

Not sure about custom colors, but the asking prices on reverb are inflated. I sold my 66' sunburst for $2400 last year and I feel that it was a fair deal.

A lot of vintage offset listings are seriously overpriced, especially on Reverb. I think it's a combination of sellers trying to charge scene tax or trying to counteract the fact that Reverb is riddled with lowballers. Around 4000-4500 for a decent CAR Jag sounds about right.

The best thing about ebay is that you can more or less see what things have actually been selling for. Not so with Reverb! I constantly see £300 guitars on there for £1500, and they...just sit there. It's lame

And then local sellers link to Reverb asking prices to say "this is what these guitars are going for."

100%!
People need to get their heads round just selling things for what they are worth. And as we're here, the idea that guitar prices will keep on rising, forever, is completely stupid

So how much in reality do I need to pay for a nice 64 or 65 sunburst Jag dots no binding?

Head to Ebay, search Fender Jaguar, select 'sold', select 'highest first' and see what's been actually moving for the last few months- the answer is 'not much'...

Interesting seeing the eBay sold prices. I guess it depends whether that's where vintage offsets are being sold these days. I've been searching for a late 60s jazzmaster for the last year and there's very little that's come up on eBay.

Re: Did vintage Jag prices JUST jump up a few grand?!
I recently inquired about a 66 Jazzmaster on Reverb listed $400 higher than an almost identical 66 on ebay. The more expensive guitar had neck specs that I liked better, and I mentioned the other 66 on ebay and asked if they had any wiggle room. They refused to budge at all. I moved along.
I'm in the market, but am really trying to do my diligence to make sure I know enough about the market before I make a purchase. I tend to get tunnel vision and buy quickly when I get my sights set on something. I'm trying not to do the same thing here.

That's what I have—65 burst w dots. Despite the Reverb ridiculousness, I think you could probably get one for around 3K USD these days if I had to guess, but not sure what the prices are like over there!
