1962 Bass VI

Post by redeyeflight » Tue Jun 19, 2018 1:10 pm

This guy came into my life a little bit ago. First year features: slab board, different pickups, no strangle switch, and no bridge mute. Neck date is 1962, pot dates are 1961. Probably a oly white refin but it was super hard to tell under a blacklight. If it is a refin, it's old! Plays and sounds incredible! Actually sounds surprisingly similar to my upgraded squire bass VI although the squire has rounds and the vintage has flats. Anyways, thought everyone would enjoy a few pics:

Lovely ! They are unique and wonderful instruments. You going to fix that errant "above ground" ground wire from the controls to the bridge?

I've seen this somewhere, I remember the wire from the control plate sticking out.

Congratulations dude, I've always wanted a vintage bass vi. I prefer the look of the gen 1's. This one looks stellar.

How different is the nut spacing of the strings? I recall another topic where someone compared a vintage and a Squier and said they were pretty different. What do you say?

It was for sale here locally but also on reverb from reverendguitarman. He's on instagram too. Was able to work out a somewhat elaborate trade deal with him otherwise I would have never been able to afford it. The nut spacing is definitely not as wide as a squire bass VI. A bud of mine has a 1970 bass VI and the nut spacing on that is even narrower! Almost like a jazz bass vs p bass. To me this one is the perfect size. The squire almost feels like a bass compared to a vintage one which is definitely more guitar-like.

How do you manage the low E at the first fret ?

The string looks like it is almost off the neck.

Its just a weird camera angle. String spacing is great. It plays like a champ!

Beautiful!

I really like the side-by-side Squire comparison too. There are virtually no new guitars I've wanted to buy in recent years, other than one of the Squire Bass VIs. Kinda feel like I've probably missed the boat on getting one for a bargain price. How do they compare to the real thing?
You think you can't, you wish you could, I know you can, I wish you would. Slip inside this house as you pass by.

It's a refin, this is my old one that came from a forum member here as well - BassVIist!

If you look in the archives here you can see threads on it and pics, etc.

For the price its super hard to beat the squire. I did do some upgrades to mine: mastery bridge, Japanese vibrato, labella roundwounds, and had the pickups rewound. Just changing the bridge to a mastery would be enough really though and totally worth it since the squier is so cheap to begin with.
