NGD : Hofner 176 Solid Deluxe

Post by Skeeze » Sun Jun 03, 2018 9:09 am

Hi, just a few words and pictures to show my new guitar, right from today’s local flea market.

It is a Hofner 176 Solid Deluxe, from around 1964-1965. Not a « galaxy », which is pretty close, but misses the Varitone switch.

I love these guitars a lot - already own two 173 from different periods. They have a raw, fat, deep sound - think « the kills » of course. Big neck and powerful pickups.
This one misses a few bits here and there but nothing major, will be up and running pretty soon I hope.

Very, very nice find. A cool offset !!

Gotta love those stripe inlays... too bad they aren't more popular these days.

Love the shop sticker!

And glad to hear these have proper necks, so disppointing to lust after a guitar and find they used a ruler for the neck ;)

Yes, the necks (and it’s the case on my 3 Hofner solidbodies) are really meaty. As a matter of fact I dig fat necks, these are quite comfy (to me) especially for blues / r&b.

yep, BUT i do have a 173 parts project (too much for me to ever end up fixing, really...) that has the most amazing smooth and thin neck!!!
i was sad to let the 176 go, but i just really COULD NOT play it...

Hey guys sorry for the reboot of an old(ish) thread but just freaking love these things. SEVERELY gassing for one but due to lack of funds (and space) can't justify it right now.

May try and build some kind of partscaster Frankenstein version raiding my parts bin etc

I have a few questions about them though if anyone could answer them it would be much appreciated.

First off what is the scale length on these? Tried googling it and had results from 25 inch to 26 inch.

Secondly, has OP restored this yet (if so update pics please haha)

Thirdly if someone has plans for these or just details on the specs it would be greatly appreciated. i.e. body wood, measurements, diagrams for the crazy wiring.

I know I'm asking a lot but you know how it is when the obsession kicks in haha

many thanks, Jack
