Galanti Grand Prix Dating

Post by Jazzmastervsjaguar » Sun May 27, 2018 9:07 am

Hey folks I am currently awaiting a dream guitar of mine, a 1960’s Galanti Grand Prix. I owned a Goya panther S-3 and loved it but always liked the Grand Prix pickguard shape and style a little more for my taste...then I found out they actually made a few in a sparkle finish! Couldn’t pass it up.

Anyway the listing said it’s a 1967 but was curious on how to date these guitars the serial number is pretty low and I’m not sure when Galanti started making these. Any info would be greatly appreciated.

Hi,
I can’t really help except have a look on the pots and the Ducati capacitors, they may have a date on them.
Anyway 1967 is possible for sure.
I had two, with a slight difference between them (pickguard shape mainly).

Ok thanks. Yeah the one I have on it's way has the smaller pick guard (which I prefer).

Awesome! One of the few guitars I'd still like to own at some point. Please post pics when you can. :)

From the listing pic is the best I have at the moment. Can't wait to see it in person.

Wow !!!! Stunning ! I never ever knew They made some in sparkle!! :derp:

Here is the one I still have. I used it a lot as a pro onstage, so I changed the selector, without drilling any hole. still have the original push buttons - a nightmare when you need to be fast, and prone to a lot of failures / bad contacts etc. Also changed the pickups, and that changed the whole game for this guitar (YMMV). At a gig in Belgium i stepped on the jack and cracked the bottom of the pickguard where the input jack stands. A friend repaired it to me.
The playability of these guitars when setup right is excellent, I love and played mine a lot.

Very strange things catch my eyes. Look at the location of the neck pickup, the dot markers...
Even the pickguard seems a bit different (upper horn, mine seems a bit rounder?).
Specs could have been all over the place at the factory :-)

There was a lot of variation on there guards, kind of why I was thinking this was earlier than 1967. Here is one that is serial number 56:

Also another example of the small guard no labels for pick ups:

Both have 22 frets as well

Very interesting, thanks for the head-up. Different necks, I wouldn’t have thought they would go so far !! This is weird.

Still searching the internet to figure out a date on this thing. Surprisingly very little info. No pot date or date on the caps. Anyone know what years theirs are and can tell me what the serial number is I figure with SN#65 it is probably a first year production but I can't find when they started making these.

I don't know anything about these besides them being Italian, so I'm no help.
I have played one before and I loved it to pieces.
Many of these somewhat unknown Italian electrics were pretty damn good for their time.

The pickups look like Jolanas to me. There were chrome/chrome and chrome/black ones. No idea on the age of these, but I think the earliest year would be ’63.
