Hey folks!
Today's afternoon I stepped into my guitar tech's workshop asking him to fix some buzz on my recently set up Eastwood Sidejack Deluxe - and almost the minute I stepped in he said... that would be something for you, wouldn't it?
...Showing me a strangely modded and recently lacquer-stripped 70s Jaguar.
The preowner had it refinished several times. And put this Widerange Humbucker in the middle position.

Neck is well played but "untouched" and all other parts (plates, electronics, bridge etc. are original. The Whammy bar is missing though.



I somehow imagined it a lot heavier... pretty light to be honest!
It's a 6 or 7 piece alder body with the nail-marks on the back the old fender models have from the finishing job back then...

His plan:
Dismount the Widerange.
Get a fitting cellulose pickguard (fitting the finish)
Maybe refret it (if needed).
Refinish it in either a vintage correct or any other colour I or somebody else likes to have it.
Set it up and sell it!

He asked me to make an offer... as some of you might already know I never owned any valuable vintage guitar and besides my Thinline Jag all my other guitars are in the 300-800 bucks price segment (new).

So what would a beast like this be worth?

I'm still a big fan of Block inlays and matching headstocks on offsets! Even though the MHS would probably further devalue it for any future attempts to sell it?

Any colour suggestions?
As both my Jag and Eastwood are Sunburst. That one is off the table for me.

I'm super tempted by the new american pro sonic grey.
Also Charcoal Frost Metallic or a Faded Ice Blue Metallic would look killer.

I'm helpful for any kind of suggestion and price-advice!

If you buy this i will pay over the odds for the pickguard if you ever return it to stock as im looking to drop a wide range in the middle of a already routed vintage jag and dont wanna mess a old pickguard up

My favorite guitar ever is a lake placid blue b&b jag, but honestly sherwood would be the best possible option.

If I was gonna get that jag, I'd definitely leave that wrhb in place. At least until I was 100% sure I didn't like the sound. I guess they do go for crazy money sometimes, so it makes it more of a bargain if you sell it.

Honestly sherwood green is not my cup of tea. But all the other options you've listed sound absolutely great!

I'll guess at $1600-1800..but then you got to consider you could probably get $100 out of the guard and quite a bit more for that wide range if it's original if you were to try to flip them

For those of us whose picking techniques require the space between pickups for pick clearance, I'm wondering how hard that thing would be to play with that big WRHB in the middle ? There's not a lot of clear space there. Having said that, I have an almost identical vintage worn WRHB in my box of bits, and I'd be intrigued to know how it would sound in a Jag. Also wondering how the switching is wired ?

Remember, it's a 70s jag. They typically go for a little less. It also has a huge route for a wide range HB. That's irreparable. Sure they can fill it and cover it, but the truth is that it's always there now.

Agree with others that the widerange in there is super-interesting, especially since it's alredy there -- and I'd be kinda tempted to do the least invasive refin possible. Just do the body in a whatever color you want and leave the rest just as is -- and make an offer given that this is the most minimal work for him. That way you keep as much that's 'original' to the guitar as possible and hang it's overall 'aura' in the Benjaminian / Adornian sense.

If you really hate the WR, then I'd think you could trade the cost of filling the route + a new pickguard for what he could realize on the WR -- and hang onto that vintage pickguard since you already have a buyer for it. But in any case, it's a refin + it's had substantial body modifications, both of which have to devalue it considerably.

And yeah, I wouldn't mess with the headstock for the same 'preservationist' reasons, but that's me.
