Best repro/drop-in tuners for a 1962 JM

Hi all-

My 1962 JM is playing great but the tuners are perhaps the worst I've ever used. Restringing is actually painful. Can someone direct me to a great drop-in replacement that won't require enlarging the tuner holes? I know Gotoh makes some good options, but there's a ton of them and I'm hoping someone has a model # handy.

I'd personally go with the repros made by Kluson (MC6LN, I think). Might as well get as close to the originals as you can.

I have a set on another guitar & they're great.

Just out of interest, what's the problem with the originals? Are they just stiff?

Yes, they're painfully stiff. My tech tried a number of things to get them going again and no love. Good tuners make or break an instrument for me, so there's no point in being precious about these older ones. I'll bag them up, label it and toss them in the case.

No probs. Just double-check the diameter of your headstock holes before you order them.

I'm surprised lubricant won't get your old ones working. Maybe they're badly rusted inside. People have got into them before to sort this kind of thing out but it's a very tricky job. The little nibs that hold the casings shut are notoriously brittle & will snap if badly handled. Bagging them up is probably a much more sensible idea.

Made in Japan Gotohs are the the best IMHO. Not very expensive and they were used on MIA AVRI Fender I think.
