Custom Color Jazzmaster Collection

Post by bencrit » Sat Feb 10, 2018 2:44 pm

Well, I took a shot like this last year, so here is an updated one with some more custom colors. From left to right we have:

1962 Slab board LPB
1963 Sherwood Green
1964 Daphne Blue with Gold Hardware
1964 Fiesta Red with Gold Hardware
1963-64 Lake Placid Blue (very clean one!)

All are original finishes!

Beautiful collection! What does the sherwood green look like under the guard? Darker or lighter? I never really got a grip of the correct tint. The AVRI ones were way darker.

Nice collection!
(guess my black '63 would not look inappropriate in such a picture )

There’s not a huge contrast on this example. The finish is original, but it was only played on a limited basis at first and then stored in the case. It’s been a while since I peaked under there, but I think it was just a tad lighter.

It’s really on the lake placid blue examples that you see more of a contrast. The yellowing reacts with the blue and leaves it in the shade of green. Many people have mistaken extremely yellowed lake placid blue examples for sherwood green, only to recognize they have overpaid when looking under the hood :-).

Interestingly, The 62 shows only slight yellowing, and 63 shows almost no yellowing. Very nice vibrant blue hue on that one.

I'd consider that underpaying. Yellowed LPB is the best

Ok, now which one is the best player?! Which one has the best sound, in your opinion?

That’s a tough one. Of these I think the 62 LPB sounds pretty great. The slab board gives it a sparkly yet mellow sounds I really like. but they all have different subtleties which make them nice.

Yeah, the actual sherwood green looks almost closer to otm. But it's hard to tell when you've never owned one. Is this the same one that CME had along with a bunch of other custom color jazzmasters?

The Sherwood Green didn’t come from CME, although they did have one (I think the electronics had been messed and it was a transition model with so it took awhile to move). The Daphne Blue was with CME, but I didn’t buy it from them directly. I barely missed out on it and happened to have it land in my lap in a fortuitous deal.

Okay! Very cool collection. Sherwood green has always been my favourite custom colour. Although i wouldn't mind a daphne or any of the others for that matter! The 63/4 lpb looks incredible.

I'd love to play any of them.
