Hotter single coil for Musicmaster?

Post by Dorcus_Maximus » Fri Nov 10, 2017 6:00 pm

I have a '73-ish Musicmaster (24") with the original neck pickup in it. I like it a lot but would like to try something that will push harder. Not interested in buckers. I'm chasing shimmering break-up with lots of harmonics. Suggestions?

Also, the body was routed for a bridge p/u and Mustang style switches so I got a suitable pick guard made and installed the switches and a JB Jr. (which I rarely use). Might go back to a single coil in the bridge.

Well, I guess I'm talking to myself here but...

I installed an old SD Quarter Pounder in the neck position. Definitely more muscle but it muddied up a lot and maybe lost too much sparkle. Kinda thinking about a trying the Fralin SP43.

I got this from Creamery for my Mustang-in-progress but since it's not yet fully assembled, I haven't been able to try it.

Will of course do some recordings as soon as it's done and will be sure to post it here.

Have you thought about the SD Mustang Antiquity II?

I have antiquity mustang II neck in my Mustang and it is slightly hotter and more focused than stock '65 pickups. It is also much usable in distortion situations, since it is wax potted and fairly quiet overall.
