1966 JM on Reverb
i was looking for a vintage jm on reverb and found that one:
https://reverb.com/item/6115439-fender- ... r-sunburst
seller says no tremlock, maybe refinned neck and replaced nut...
i mean, how about the bridge?
am i missing something?

Re: 1966 JM on Reverb
Pretty strange he doesn't mention that terrible looking bridge as being non-original. Maybe talk him down to include the cost of a StayTrem.
Are CBS era Jazzmasters really worth this much now? It might be worth making him an offer.

You think you can't, you wish you could, I know you can, I wish you would. Slip inside this house as you pass by.

It definitely looks like it has been refretted (frets look bigger and thicker and go over the binding). Nothinng wrong with that but you should know.

Re: 1966 JM on Reverb
well, i'm not exactly on the hunt for a jm right now...
i was just looking around and stumbled onto this one and found it very weird to see no metion of the clearly replaced bridge. not to mention the refret and god knows what else.
it's always very sad to see how people give wrong or partial descriptions on reverb and ebay...
the more i see things like that the less i feel comfortable on buying on those sites.

Re: 1966 JM on Reverb
This is exactly why I don't buy from private sellers. I'll only ever buy from a reputable shop. It might cost a little more, but worth it for the piece of mind. A good example of this is that I bought a 61 Jazzmaster from some idiot off Reverb who said it was "all-original." When the guitar arrived, it was COVERED in thick black spraypaint, the switches were totally jammed, and it had a refret. Returned it. Later on, another private seller (who sells a lot on Reverb) messaged me to tell me he ended up buying the guitar (he saw my post about it). He immediately put the guitar up on reverb to flip for a $1000 profit. He never disclosed the issues on the listing, and I ended up getting into a huge argument about how dishonest that was. He ended up calling (CREEPY) and leaving me a 2 minute long voicemail screaming at me for "not knowing anything" about guitars. He is a totally unstable and insane individual (and is still selling offsets on Reverb).biro wrote:well, i'm not exactly on the hunt for a jm right now...

Long story short, you never know what you're getting when you buy from a private seller. Avoid where possible.

I don't think you should avoid private sellers... I just think that you need to ask all the right questions as a buyer and hopefully be able to tell what's wrong with the instrument from detailed pictures. I've bought tons of cool things from private sellers, but its important to do the research first.Crshngdstryr wrote:This is exactly why I don't buy from private sellers. Yeah, you need to be educated when buying anything used from anywhere if you don't want to get taken. You might have a little more protection buying from a store, but the selection will be smaller, the prices higher and you're not really guaranteed to be satisfied with your purchase, you just theoretically will have fewer hassles returning it if you're not (though even that's not guaranteed).
Though look who's talking... I buy most of the cars I buy Certified Pre-Owned through dealers. But that's because I can't fix most car problems, and I can't see them in advance like you can most guitar problems.

Re: 1966 JM on Reverb
I mainly buy from private persons and only occasionally from a shop. And I always ask for pictures first, including shots from the inside of a guitar. When all seems okay then I make an appointment to test and collect. Never anything via mail. Must feel, hear the guitar. Can't really go wrong.

Harmonica bridge on a JM is a weird idea.

Nah shops can be just as bad, some worse..I can point to multiple dealer listings on reverb right now where things haven't been disclosed.

These Reverb prices have been getting more and more insane by the day. I cannot believe that price for that particular guitar.

Re: 1966 JM on Reverb
Most old guitars you buy will have some problems or issues. Dealers and stores make mistakes too. Since you love offsets there's a good chance you know more about the guitar than the guy selling it, or at least care more about the details and the setup.
Just use that knowledge to make the right choices, and expect to have a few extra things to deal with. The more you buy, the more mistakes you make, the more guitars you handle, the easier it gets. I think

Re: 1966 JM on Reverb
FYI - that guitar initially went for sale on a local Irish craigslist type site for 5.5k euro! The price currently listed on that Irish site is 3,999 euro.
The seller is also selling a refinished D&B Jaguar (looking for the entirely unrealistic price of 4k for it) and a '71 Jaguar (looking for 3.5k now reduced to 2.9k). I was tempted to point out that there was a custom colour CAR Jaguar for sale in a store for 2.7k until recently which made his price for a non-custom colour '71 a bit out of whack, but decided not to wade into it.
I think the seller is shifting a lot of gear to raise money to buy a house so I suspect this is why the prices are a bit over the norm.
I'm not sure that 4k for a B&B '66 with some issues is worth it considering I paid less than that for my straight '62 not that long ago. But then again Irish prices are a little inflated generally - and 4k is a lot more reasonable than the 5.5k euro originally posted!!
