I'm out of the country, but will be back in a week! I'll get some pictures, though!

Re: Got the guitar... New D&B Custom Color Jazzmaster incomi
Alright! Finally got the guitars in my hand and boy is it dreamy. It reminds me of my old ash blonde Jaguar that was also in similar shape...
It sounds awesome. Maybe even a little sweeter than my '66... The real nice thing is the neck profile. A lot more substantial and round than my '66. The pickups sound amazing. The thing is 100% original, minus the switch tip. It has a repro on it now, but I've got a period correct one coming in the mail. The thing has clearly been around a lot of cigarette smoke. It smells and needs a deep cleaning... My tech is going to kill me when I ask him to give it a nice cleaning when he takes it apart. I'm just wise enough not to remove that guard because I know it will be a pain putting it back on... It's a great weight. I can't tell if it's been refretted or not. Either way, doesn't necessarily need a refret right away.
I have a theory that guitars that look like this play and sound exceptionally well. I mean look at it! Someone really dug it for many, many years. I think that I will keep this around for a while. I have a Staytrem that will go on and I will remove the buzz stop). This one's a winner folks.
Love the experimental super early CBS black logo:

Damn! That is dreamy! This sort of creamy white + dark tortoise is still one of my all time favourite color combos on JMs. Does not get any better than that.
Those look like original frets to me. Happy to read the neck profile is nice and the pickups are sweet. Incredible guitar!

I couldn't tell because it doesn't look like there are really any nibs on the binding (which my '66 had before I had it refretted). Just spend some more time playing this... It's really special. I think that I'll have to shell out the funds for a refret soon. Right now my mission is have its originality confirmed, get rid of that old cigarette smell (which one day of airing out/dryer sheets in the case has done a lot already), and have the bridge replaced with a Staytrem. It's really interesting to compare it to my '66 which is just 9 months younger than this one. We've got small vs. big headstock, dots vs. blocks, and we'll see about the electronics.kosmonautmayhem wrote:Damn! That is dreamy! You know, you might be right about the binding nibs. Kinda looks like the one from the closeup was cut. I mean, it's not like there's a lot of nib there. but the original frets on my FEB66 D+B JM went cleanly all the way to the binding with very little apparent nib coming up on the fretboard. If the frets were replaced they look very much like the wide and low wire used during this time. I wouldn't sweat the frets if it plays great. Sounds like your not bothered which is a good thing.
I'm curious what the pickups will measure. The one big drawback I had with mine was the abnormally low output pickups. Like 6k-ish range. Sounded pretty damn great turned up but needed a boost to get near the usual 8k range. Shame since I loved the neck on my D+B. Not nearly as big as my '64 but just a nice oval with a bit of a D shape and felt like butter.
And that checking! I haven't been this covetous of another offset in a while, but this one...

Beautiful! The perfect patina on this one
I normally prefer lighter/faded tort but the pickguard on this is just right. Well done, enjoy it.

The tort looks darker in the pictures from the shade. When I get it back from my tech I'll take some shots of it with my real camera, also ones comparing it to my '66.
