65/66 Mustang Refin

Post by lefty » Thu Jul 27, 2017 10:11 am

I bought this mustang from HNB a year or so ago. It was a great deal and I appreciated HNB posting it to the UK. Everything was good and I love the guitar, especially the chunky neck. The finish was pretty good, but unfortunately it had taken a knock during shipping and a small chip of paint had come off the front by the upper horn. No big deal really, and it gave me an excuse to refin to something a bit more historically correct. The original colour was Dakota red but I've always really like Fender blues so I thought I'd go Daphne instead.

It also had a Dimarzo Area 58 in the neck and a lil '59(?) I think in the bridge and I couldn't get on with the sound of it. The area 58 sounded great but I think I'm just not a humbucker fan so that had to go. I wanted to go as close to the original sound as possible so I bought a set of '64 mustang pups from Jamie at the Creamery. I looked at loads of options and didn't want to spend a fortune or cheap out either. There sound pretty great, so I'm happy I went that way. The lacquer was from Manchester Guitar Tech and its given it a pretty decent finish despite my ham fisted level of skill. So its not a massive resto project but I'm pretty pleased the the results.

So here was HNB refin thread.

DUDE. that's AWESOME!
Although I would try and find some pickups that look more the part :)
Otherwise, i approve of your (supposedly) very modest and ham-fisted skills!!!!!!

Haha! Thanks mang, kind words indeed. Its the second one I done and I think it was the lacquer that helped how good it looks. I sprayed on some really hot sunny days and it looked like the thinners just evaporated as soon it the touched the guitar. No blooming, no orange peel, minimal sanding. Apart from a couple of clumsy drunken "incidents" it was pretty easy. Note to self - don't drink and paint.

Great job on the refinish job. Is it the sonic blue or Daphne Blue. Also Guitar reranch is great source for Fender Colors and all your refinishing needs in the future.

Looks good, and makes me excited for the return of my Daphne blue '65 Mustang, which will almost certainly be put up here to sell almost immediately.
Back in those days, everyone knew that if you were talking about Destiny's Child, you were talking about Beyonce, LaTavia, LeToya, and Larry.

Thanks for the kind words. It's risen to number 1 spot for now, loving the plinky little short scale feel.
