Weird Sunburst on 1963 Jaguar

Post by surfingonacid » Sun Jun 25, 2017 8:16 am

The 1963 Jaguar that I owned in the past definitely did not have a perfect sunburst (you could see mistakes).
But this one, http://www.ebay.com/itm/PRE-CBS-1963-FE ... 1813620892 , really caught me by surprise.
Or is it an old refin job?

Which reminds me; last year I was offered a 1963 Fender Jaguar in sunburst but the back of the body was completely black.. The owner had never thought anything of it and agreed with me that maybe at some point the back was painted black by a previous owner. Maybe to cover up some buckle rash? I might have a photo of it somewhere in an email if anyone is curious.

There's definitely some variation in early sunbursts but that looks like the black was touched up, at least, and not particularly well. I've seen original sunbursts where the black has a lot of overspray, but there's too much of a hard edge to that one. The transition isn't smooth as it usually is in original bursts.

Like a Custom or Maverick, though that was a factory finish to hide the filled rout.

That black edge looks like a true black, whereas the black Fender used on pre-CBS sunbursts has a tint of brown to it.

i don't like it, i really don't...
no transition between colours, wide black area... pretty bad job imo.
even worse if it's an original finish

I've seen a few pre-CBS fenders with a really dark burst. Here's a 62 Jag:

And a 59 Jazzmaster:

Pre-CBS were much less streamlined and mechanicalized. This is what makes those guitars great, it also means a lot more variation, which some might say gives each one more character. I don't know if its a refin or not but its possible its not.
