Authenticity check please, is it legit? 1965 Jaguar

Post by ViggoP » Mon Apr 03, 2017 10:49 am

I am about to buy my first vintage Jaguar, a sunburst 1965 veneer board without binding.
Supposedly, it's all original except for the nut.

I made an Imgur album with the pictures the seller supplied. Does it look alright?

Nothing stands out to me as being new/fake based on those photos. Looks very clean.

Thanks! I think it looks really nice as well!
I'm going to go see it later today, is there anything I should pay extra attention to? I'd be thankful for any advice!

No way! I just bought myself a 1965 Jag!
That's a nice one you've got there.

Nice! How do you like it? Or are you still waiting for it to arrive?

Personally, I have taken the neck off any vintage guitar I have bought in person so that I could check the date stamp, and check that the truss rod turns. If it currently plays well and has an adjustable truss rod (in both directions, to make sure it's not "maxed out" currently), then that's the biggest question answered IMHO.

You can also check if the pickup height is adjustable (the guards often shrink around them and "freeze" them in place). This can be remedied, carefully, but is still an issue to be identified and/or discussed when it comes time to haggle.

Check the finish on the neck for overspray - if they re-sprayed the back of the neck, you'll typically find a transition point of thicker finish between the original finish (often on the back of the headstock and/or the heel of the neck) and the new spray job (which typically covers the playing surface of the back of the neck).

Make sure the tuners work well without "play" or "slop" (a range of movement that doesn't affect the pitch of the string) as these are signs of mechanical issues in the tuner that are not easily resolved. Again, not the end of the world, but these are the little things that can add up.

Good luck!

Only thing I can see is it's missing the "contour body" part of the decal. Maybe that's why there isn't a close up picture of the headstock.

Yeah, it's not there. But everything else on the neck checks out and I've seen a couple others without, also early 1965's, so I'm not worried about it. Maybe they ran out or something. It's really a fantastic neck.
