Looking for opinions on a 65 refin JM

Post by blackbox » Fri Mar 10, 2017 6:53 pm

I'm just shopping around. This one seems like a decent deal, but it's not pre-CBS. Thoughts?

I think it's gorgeous! Bound neck and all original except for the refin - that's quite awesome. I love the burgundy mist too.

There's more to life than being pre-CBS. 65s have a great reputation. The only decision CBS made that affected the 65s was the addition of binding.

Having said that, I'm not entirely convinced that that's a good price for a refin. Used to be that refins lost 30-50% value. Reverb prices for them have been reaching ever-upward. It's not the most outrageous price I've seen, but I would not call it a "deal".

looks like it has the wide gibson style frets that appeared on some instruments the early CBS period
they are quite different to the usual frets. totally different feeling .... some like it, some love it, others hate it

Man, those look like it's been refretted.... I know a brief period had the 'Gibson' frets but those look huge and relatively clean for a supposed 65.

Look legit to me. I had a very early all orig '66 and the frets were exactly like these. They're wide, but insanely low.

I love the neck of my 65, feels big and chunky. If it plays and feels anything like mine, it's most likely a super sweet guitar! IMHO it is a refret, my 65 had the bigger frets and they were wider than vintage Fender fretwire but not as wide as these. Also I don't see the binding nubs which would also indicate a refret (nothing wrong with that!).
Price is a tad high but JMs prices seem to always be going up...

I thought binding nibs are a Gibson thing. Fenders have them too?
Anyway, for collectors that look for "under the bed" condition, the jazzy in question would definitely be out of consideration, but I personally think of frets as a consumable component. Good ones get played, as they say, and if they get played a lot they need a refret.

Vintage d&b and b&b fenders do not have nibs.

Pic of the frets on a FEB 66 JM I had:

^^ I beg to differ. Here is the necks of my 65 JM (before its refret). Surely the nibs aren't as big as in a Gibson, but they're there. Being 65 a year of transition, maybe they were trying different building techniques.

You're probably right about the transition experimentation. In addition to the nibs on your '65, I also note the smaller headstock and a rosewood board that is darker and more akin to my '64 Jag. All of the CBS-era guitars I've owned, including that early '66 JM and a '66, '67 and '68 Jag, had much lighter rosewood that displayed more grain, the bigger CBS headstock and no binding nibs. Also, I've owned 3 of the recent AV65's and none had nibs. Perhaps deleting them in mid-late '65 was a cost-cutting measure?

Another thing is the fact that the knobs are changed on this guitar. It's not huge, but worth noting. I would call the guy and get the "details". Also most people are willing to deal down fom their asking price. 2500 would probably be decent market value on this assuming everything else is original.

It's a bit over-priced in my opinion, but not much.

That d3cal is a repro I guess rather than original, so it's a full refin rather than a body only refin (or did I miss something - I only skimmed the reverb photos).

I've found a '66 B&B refin for under 2k euro. The price on this translates to about 2.7k euro ... which is a bit high. I'd have thought something like 2.2-2.5k would be about right - allowing for D&B (less common given their short run) and the few other snags/issues.

Probably a great guitar though - I've played a few D&B Jags and one other JM ... the ones I've played have been light, resonant guitars. And I quite like those wide/low Gibson type frets (but then again ... I like old Gibsons).

Here's the "Before" listing:

https://reverb.com/au/item/3721781-fend ... gundy-mist" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

It looks like they chipped the paint off of the neck and gave it a new decal. The photos in the original listing are really nice and show some over sanding and generally make the refinish look worse... though I love that pickguard!
It should clean up really nice, though ask questions - for some reason it has a 1970's neck plate number - other parts might be changed too!
