Scam?
Check out the other gear for sale by Vintage Gear VT on Reverb.
Two more unplayed vintage mustangs (one's a bass). And two pristine guitars from the late 50s for $20k and $45k.
No prior history on Reverb. Joined in 2017.
Something fishy about that.

Well, I don't think you can look at a one-off sale as market value. There's a sucker born every minute, as the saying goes.mbene085 wrote:I wonder if anyone will be foolish enough to assume that the asking price is the true market value? Then again, if someone pays for it, that means it *was* market value...

Re: Six Thousand Dollars for a Mustang?
I think that's probably a bit high for this guitar. But not quite as high as you might think. Mint museum pieces like this are extremely rare. Also, the case candy there is worth a bit on its own or even sold as a set or partial set.
It could be that the seller simply has this in his collection and is willing to part for with it only for the right price. There's really no harm in putting up gear at high asking prices in case someone with expendable cash decided they wanted. But I would not expect this to sell very quickly.
Part of the issue is comparative price points for other guitars. I'll bet you could probably find a mint or near mintcondition sunburst offset guitar with some case candy for around this price if you waited long enough. Which would you rather have, a Mustang like this or a jaguar or jazzmaster?
In the end, we live in a free market environment. People can ask whatever they want for their guitars, and people can spend whatever they want. I have scoffed at prices on certain guitars at times, only to see them sell very quickly.

My friend has a Comp Orange Mustang in just as good a condition and he paid £1700 for it two years ago.

I don't think I've ever seen a price tag this high on a Mustang that wasn't left-handed. Was it carved and assembled by Adrian Belew and Kurt Cobain? Is it enchanted in some way?

That's pretty steep for a mustang. But the case candy isn't cheap on its own,
Still, only takes one person with expendable cash...
