The finish is the first thing that's obviously wrong, especially the back.

The decal? Pat pend underneath the contour body. Not seen that before.

Yeh the whole decal is a reproduction, the spacing is all wrong of the patents underneath, it directly matches the cheap repros.. you can also see scratches in the headstock that actually continue underneath the decal too! The offset contour part on Bass VI decals never ever have pat pend. or pat pending on them..not to mention it's badly printed.
Also has a '64 or later bridge on it.
The finish of the body?? What did you think was wrong..looked ok to me.

Right off the bat, funky decal and later-era bridge. Nothing else jumps out at me, though. I should check it out in person some time.

The lock button on the vibrato has sharp edges, which the Japanese have and the Americans never did. Case closed.

I am not seeing what you're seeing.Ceylon wrote:The lock button on the vibrato has sharp edges, which the Japanese have and the Americans never did. Case closed.
The Fender Japan lock buttons are shiny, this one is not. The Fender Japan assemblies have an oval hole in the top plate where the collet sticks out, this one does not. The strings appear to run in a straight line from bridge to tailpiece, whereas Fender Japan vibratos have the outermost E strings angling in due to the narrower hole spacing.
Oh, and I don't see the button having a 'sharp' edge.

I saw that the one it question looks like it has much more squared off edge than 60's trem I pulled out of my parts draw to compare.
