Hang on, 1965 Electric XII with DOTS and Binding??

Post by zhivago » Sun May 28, 2017 4:21 am

So I was just surfing YouTube and came across this video:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-ds9cDnBDEg" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

You can see that this XII has dots and binding...I have always thought that they went from unbound necks straight to Blocks and Binding...have I been mistaken all these years? ???

I used to watch this video all the time before I built my XII, I always chuckled when he said it was 9.8 out of 10 and then plunks it into something at the 1:00 minute mark.

I can't believe I never caught it was dots and binding....... I'm almost appalled at myself.

Weird - it has Klusons on it.

It seems like almost all of the XIIs I see have "F" tuners on them, even if they are drilled for Klusons and F tuners from the factory.

I would have thought that if there was one with binding, it would have been made with the later-style tuners.

Must have been a custom-order, quite rare. Here's a '66 with no binding:

Though it was short-lived, there were definitely XII with Klusons in late 65 and early 66.
i don't think it was custom to have dots with binding; it was the natural progression in other models in the early CBS years.
I wonder if Fender optimistically made lots of dotted, unbound XII necks at the start of the production run, as they did in the VI, and this unused inventory carried well through the implementation of binding. When they needed to make more necks, they were well into the blocks and binding phase.

You have a '65 with D&B and a '66 with an unbound fretboard. That's not a natural progression, that's going backwards. I've never seen a '66 Jag or JM with an unbound rosewood board, for example.

That's why I think this D&B was custom. Quite hard to find any other examples of it as well.

Honestly I never knew there was a version without binding. I've seen dots and binding before. Here's one with a 65 neck date and no binding.

Dots and binding was a progressive step by Fender for all of their models that ended up with blocks and binding in 1965-66.
Its like they first had to train their workers to do binding and then phased in the block inlays.

Many 65-66 Jazz basses show this transition:

1. clay dots with reverse Kluson tuners
2. pearl dots with chrome paddle tuners
3. pearl dots with binding with chrome paddle tuners
4. pearl blocks with binding with chrome paddle tuners

For guitars substitute F tuners for Kluson tuners.

I couldn't have told you either way so I had to look. My 66 XII is unbound with dots.

Mine is dots and no binding but it has the remains of a filled Kluson hole under the lacquer, by the 'F' tuner. The s/n starts 154***, so a '66.
