For god's sake, are there any good keyboard stands?

All instruments that aren't guitars (or bass guitars).

For god's sake, are there any good keyboard stands?

Post by amv » Mon Sep 28, 2015 6:02 pm

I have a small vintage synth rig that I'm looking to place on stands, either as a two-tier or a three tier; some combination of a Yamaha DX7, Yamaha DX7IIFD, and Roland D-50. In other words, all of my keyboards are about the same size.

EVERY single stand I research has at least a few reviews claiming it falls apart, isn't stable, doesn't fit some totally reasonable keyboard size or suffers from other full-stop deal-breaking nightmare defect. Granted, at least some percentage of these must be user error, of course, but it's still enough to give me paws (like a cat—a frustrated cat).

Can anyone recommend a 2-tier (or 3-tier, if I'm really pushing my luck) keyboard stand that just works reliably?

Considering that 1) people have been performing with keyboard stands for decades, and 2) a keyboard stand doesn't HAVE to be anything more than a totally inanimate object that resists the force of gravity, you'd think the greatest engineering minds on planet Earth could have solved this problem, I dunno, thousands of years ago?

Sorry if the frustration is too palpable, but I'm just blown away this isn't a long-since solved problem.

Sorry if this is a stupid question, but have you looked into Hercules stands? I have no experience with their keyboard stands, but I've used Hercules guitar, sax, & mic stands for years with no problems. They're durable, compact, well-designed, and hefty enough to do the job.

A two-tier keyboard stand.

Another two-tier keyboard stand.

I've also only experience with their (Hercules) guitar stands, and never ever had a prob with them. Bit pricier than some other stuff, but hey... I trust them with nice guitars.

Hercules, Apex, and K&M are the ones I usually hear. I've had a K&M table stand for a while and it was ludicrously overengineered and high quality, but very heavy. I use a Millenium KS2000 now and to the best of my knowledge it's physically incapable of collapse unless the welded joints give out.

The real issue with keyboard stands isn't designing one that doesn't collapse, but one that doesn't look like ass! The main brands all look like cheap props from a b-movie and/or a bunch of scaffolding. I miss combo Z-stands and Rhodes legs...

Only experience is with a 2-tier Millenium KS-3000. Granted, never been giged, but it's extremely sturdy and has had heavy keyboards on it (mini moogs, juno, andromedas etc) constantly for 4 years now and it's like the first day it arrived. Price is a fraction of K&S etc.

But, again, never left the comfort of the studio

I'm waiting for delivery on a quik lok Z-71. I'll let you know how it is when I get it, they are pricey but look extremely solid - z type with 3 lateral support bars and made of steel section.

I use a Roland RD700SX, it's a bit of a brute so I need the support. I'm going to stick my Seaboard up top for solos and strings.

I paid £160 plus £65 for the extra tier.

Stand Tastic stands are IMHO the best I have found. Super stable, super easy to setup, etc. etc...

I have the Hercules 2-tier stand and I love it! It's what I use at home to hold my Arp Solina mk1 (bottom) and my Juno 60 (top). I'd say it's only for sitting while playing but it's super sturdy and those two keyboards are pretty heavy together.

I use an old Ultimate Deltex 2-tier stand for my rehearsal space for playing standing up. Also, I buy all my stands used 'cuz i'm cheap ;D

I had never seen those StandTastic stands, thanks for posting that ^^ They're pretty expensive but they look really great.
