My rig that I've used for some time with The British Expeditionary Force:

Then there's the Generalmusic S2R that i'm very fond of but has unfortunately since died an intermittant sort of death brought on by touring it out of a hand-luggage size holdall packed with old newspaper:

And the Nord Wave which I've yet to play out with (top):

I've only got Ableton Suite and Pure Data. I've only gotten started with synthesis, desperately wanting to get good at it and not really knowing where to start. Sort of frustrating. I'm looking at getting a MIDI keyboard so I can actually play a keyboard and twiddle knobs rather than programming patterns and clicking around.

I'd love a hardware synth. Really though, I'd love a modular system :?

I really love my Moog Prodigy:

That's the best shot of it I can see online, and I'm not even playing it at the time!

I just have a small synth, but I love it.
I got an alesis micron a while back, and I've been ruining my bands songs with it.

Here are my three real synths- they don't see much action though as when I record I tend to go to my software GMedia Minimonsta and M-tron plugins.
They are, from the top: Korg Prophecy, Korg MS2000B and Yamaha SY85

How do you guys amplify your synths for band rehearsals and gigs? Mixer into a keyboard amp? Straight into a PA?

For gigs I used to just DI straight out (usually 2 or 3 mono signals), and get plenty put back into the nearest monitor/speaker. Not easy in smaller venues where there's usually not enough monitors to go around. For rehearsals it was through the PA along with vocals - as you might imagine in a 600w PA there's not much headroom to play with there, we used to run it right to the limit.

What I do now is run the same lines in stereo through a Behringer keyboard amp (the 300w one), that has 4 stereo inputs and a stereo mix output on XLR's, with a mono speaker, so it's almost like running a mini PA system just for the keys. Everything makes much more sense now. I set my own monitor and FOH balance; I can put a drum machine through it and where on the old PA it used to peak>limit>duck the vocals, now it sits where it's supposed to; I don't have to wait for ages for the house engineer to dig out the manky stash of dodgy DI's and check which ones work; the monitor mix on stage sounds great, all the time, every time.

For a single keyboard I might not have bothered, but for a multi-input setup in an 8-piece band it's an absolute godsend.

I only have the one keyboard, so for practice it's either into the PA or a bass amp, and for live shows it's straight into the PA with loads in the monitor...

I normally don't go in for the gear licking, "oh my" sort of stuff but that looks almost too good to use. The only trouble is that it looks so cheerful it would be hard to use it for evil.

I'd probably be tempted to encase it in a billet of glass as an object d'art.

I was talking to one of my sister's workmates at her housewarming and we were talking about music. He said he went through a period of wild eBaying and bought a load of synthesisers, and then remarked that I could have a lend of one if I wanted. Of course, I figured he was just spouting drunken nonsense and wouldn't remember any of it in the morning. But my sister phoned me just there to tell me that he just brought it into work and said I could keep it!

So, by tonight, I'll have a Roland SH-32 to play with. This'll be my first hardware synthesiser, and from what I've read, they're pretty good. I can't wait!! :w00t:

"keep it" as in "own it"? awesome!

this morning i found a vermona string-piano on ebay, a GDR (made in east germany) keyboard. there is also a broken one which i found tempting but i doubt i can fix it so it would be a waste of money.
