I'd say it'd be a good idea for a new synth from Roland. I'd hate the idea of people cutting up an original Juno. They hold a special place in my heart and I've wanted since I was 14 (I knew nothing about synths and bought a SH-2000, thinking it was a Roland so how different could it be? Still have that one, but it's no Juno).

Re: The Synth Thread...
Yesterday I picked up a little Roland Sh-01a, the module version of the SH-101. I have to say, it sounds fantastic and does a lot more than the original. I still want an original (anyone want to trade for a Moog Prodigy?) but this really is an amazing piece of technology. The Presets are great too, and offer a nice little starting point. Then Polyphony and Unison options add a lot, too. I'm currently at the cottage and way from my Juno, so I have nothing to compare it to except VSTs and apps, but this thing eats that stuff for breakfast. It sounds and "feels" real. I keep trying to find fault with the sound, but honestly... It just sounds great!
The only faults I can find with it are the size. It's cramped and toy-like in feel. The knobs and sliders are a little wiggly, and I don't imagine they'd handle a bump or knock from some foreign object too well. If it was even two times as big, it'd be perfect.
Honeymoon-period right now, of course. But I like it, and I think having this will make it so that it takes the heat off my Prodigy for not being too compatible with my Juno. Oddly, my SH-2000 works nicely with both the Prodigy and the Juno, as it's like a Roland-version of Moog/Mono-synth.
I seriously love Roland product, by the way. Amazing company.

That's awesome!! Glad to hear that the Roland boutique stuff feels reasonably solid. I was really afraid that they'd be too toy-like.

Sound-wise they are solid, but the knobs, sliders, and jacks leave a bit to be desired, unfortunately.

Hmm. That makes me feel better about missing a chance at one of the little boutique JU-06 modules...

The JU-06 isn't bad, the Jupiter one has super tiny sliders. The only thing that's annoying is the micro-USB power jack and the tiny 3.5mm audio jacks.Shadoweclipse13 wrote: ↑Sun Nov 05, 2017 9:33 amHmm. That makes me feel better about missing a chance at one of the little boutique JU-06 modules...
It's not a rugged piece for gigging. You can gig with them but I'd recommend securing everything in place with wire ties and mount it on a shelf for a keyboard stand, etc.

Yep, I'm already kind of having doubts about keeping the SH-01a. It sounds great but man, it's cramped and still feels too toy like.
While I'm not a gigging musician, I like feeling like my gear can take it if need be.

Re: The Synth Thread...
Thanks to Steven, I've seriously fallen in love with the Juno sound, and I'm planning on doing that one of two ways: either spending the money for an actual Juno 6/60/106, or trying to recreate the tone (not the polyphony) in Eurorack.

a friend of mine is building a Mutable Inst. Ambika from a kit. It's supposed to be the ultimate Juno-type desktop/EUrack synth.Shadoweclipse13 wrote: ↑Sun Nov 05, 2017 12:47 pmor trying to recreate the tone (not the polyphony) in Eurorack.

yes it is
That's cool... and TC Electronic is coming out with a pedal I guess... BUT why on earth did they not give you an adjustable Rate mode?Shadoweclipse13 wrote: ↑Mon Nov 06, 2017 7:27 pmI'm sure your friend probably knows, but I wanted to mention this incase he hadn't seen it:

That's what I love about the Alpha Juno. It still has the MN3009 chips but has adjustable Rate.

Re: The Synth Thread...
I agree. ANY parameters on a pot would've been nice beyond just on and off.
