The Hohner Pianet Electric Pianos are close to the Rhodes/Wurlitzer sound. Lighter, not much cheaper though (depends on the model).

agreed on the hohner pianet. i have one (the Pianet T) and it's served me well although i haven't touched it since my bandmate added a Nord Electro to the mix.

I had a Rhodes for about two years. They're pretty cool, and sound awesome. The downsides though: Terrible action, even after i got it tuned up. And as you know, they're heavy as hell. They're not going anywhere.

Honestly, most half-decent keyboards now-a-days have a great Rhodes simulation. I love the one on my Yamaha S08.

i'm a big fan of the wurlitzer 200. just small enough to manage it at gigs. more bite than a rhodes. depends what style of music you are playing. getting one with decent action is the hardest part.

Love, Love, Love the Rhodes sound, but can't play to save my life so definitely no point having one. If I had tons of money though I would totally have one in my house for anyone who could play. Amazing instruments....

My brother just got a Rhodes Mark I. All the YouTube vids I'd seen made it seem like it was not the same but similar to a Wurlitzer, but to my ear that is simply not the case. The sound is way different. The Rhodes is much more electric, for lack of a better word. The Wurli sounds closer to a regular old piano, even if it doesn't sound all that much like one anyway.

That one's actually not working unluckily, because the blue color is so much cooler than my black one.

But I would probably end up selling it locally if anything.
It's a cool, but I wouldn't recommend it for the sound your looking for.

well, it's missing a black key and it doesn't make a sound that's why it's so cheap. why don't you just give it a try (fixing it).

i still love rhodes and the epiano preset of my casio sounds .. nothing compared to the original.
but there are some really good plug-ins, those played through a real amp might sound pretty much like the original.

My bandmate got a Nord Electro 3 and it is awesome. It has a really great Rhodes sound. We got it because our beloved Farfisa was really cumbersome to move around and not very reliable. We are loving the Electro.

+1 on the Wurlitzer 200 series. They are a little more aggressive and "bite-ier" than the Rhodes, which I think is a plus. Think Supertramp EP sounds. Also a little more portable than a Rhodes. If you do go that route, there are a lot of resources here: http://www.vintagevibe.com" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
