Modular Synth Users!
Modular Synth Users!
I have been obsessed with synthesizers lately. Any modular users?

Re: Modular Synth Users!
Can't say I'm a "user" as my Juno-6 have been stashed away for a couple of years...but anyway - I got this:
Analog and no Midi = , but hard to use.....

Someone knows where I can find the nearest woodchipper to throw my pieces of junk into?

this is mine. it's partly doepfer with additions by analogue solutions, lifewire and a little bit DIY. i started with the modular stuff 5 or 6 years ago, loooong before i started playing guitar. but due to my restricted financial capacity it took me so long to fill the rack.

Is it hard? I'd love to get one. The part that worries me is that I'd spend a few grand on one when I can finally afford to get one, and then only ever be able to get really cheesey sounds from it.

Yeah, that is it for me. It is really expensive, and when I get it, I am afraid I wouldn't really know how to use itEl Pr0n wrote: Is it hard? I'd love to get one. Re: Modular Synth Users!
here's some of my junk. i wouldn't worry so much about the learning curve. part of the wonderfulness of this stuff is
its made up of really simple "modules" that fit together to make sounds. just like a bunch of guitar pedals combine to
make "your" guitar sound. in fact a lot of my modules are racked guitar pedals that i've modded out. that way i can
have all of my pedals/sound sources on a table instead of cluttering the floor.
even in those huge wall sized systems, each part is actually pretty simple and most have guitar pedal kind of equivelents.
a filter is just a modified wah pedal, delays are delays, reverbs are still reverbs, you just get a lot more ways of controlling
them. it doesn't take more guitar players long to figure out what's what...especially those of us with massive pedal setups!

mentally ill?
i have a pet equation for those wall sized synths. i call it the paypal theory. the larger your synth gets, the less music you actually make with it and the more time you spend on ebay buying modules for it. i swear once your modular gets past a certain size all you do is make youtube videos showing it off!
you'll probably notice that the guys who actually MAKE music often have smallish systems with holes in it because they're always changing things around. i feel as soon as an instrument gets out of immediate reach i stop using it.
but then you have the buchla problem where everything is there in a small form factor but as soon as you get a good patch going you can't see the knobs anymore. i've started dedicating a laptop for a lot of the meat and potatoes, and i bet volta is going to be a big plus in this regard.
