Drum dampening/baffles

Post by d-rock » Tue Jul 31, 2018 5:32 am

I'm looking to set my drums up again in our basement but I will most surely need some kind of dampening/baffles to keep the sound contained and not permeate throughout the rest of the house (or neighborhood). Anyone have any solutions?

I'm looking at maybe building movable walls on casters, maybe get a drum sheild for the front. I dunno.

For keeping the sound in a room, extra insulation & old mattresses/cushions on the walls/floor/ceiling. Thick spongy stuff.

As yours is in a basement, it's the ceiling that's the main thing.

Ceiling will definitely be key, but I remembered seeing this a few years ago, and thought it was interesting. Is a Tennis Ball Riser REALLY the SECRET to Quiet Drumming? Looks inexpensive and pretty easy to build. Might be worth trying...

Thanks. The next video linked in your YouTube link was this one, talking about the benefits of acoustic blankets

I'm wondering if I could save myself lots of trouble/building by hanging acoustic blankets and placing insulation between the joists in the ceiling.

Why not do both? I bet the whole thing would be super quiet! :)

That blanket one is pretty cool!

Ah, not my kit, just a photo I found online to show the style baffle I was thinking of building.

However, I do play a '68 Ludwig Silver Sparkle

Does your basement have an open or floating ceiling?

If so, putting in Roxul Safe'n'Sound insulation will give you massive bang for your buck. My friend just put some in his basement home theatre and I have to say I'm impressed. 100dB in the room and very quiet upstairs. He did all the walls and ceiling, though - not just the ceiling.

As was mentioned, transmission through your ceiling is going to be the main mechanism you have to control.

Get you drums off the floor too, you'll be supriced at how much sound will travel through the floor, and up through the walls.
Just a small riser will do wonders.
