I should abandon the idea of buying gear from the perspective of playing in public.
I highly recommend the Sub25!
Aside from vintage gear, I pick new gear with live performance in mind. The simpler the better for me. I mainly wanted the Sub Phatty cuz it has presets and midi. Plus I liked the interface and sound better than the Novation Bass Station II (which is still great). I use the Sub Phatty just for bass so I'm fine with the little keybed. Also it's being controlled by the MPC Live 2 most of the time where it can change presets mid song for me while I play piano & synth pads.

For recording, I mainly use modular for bass so that's def not something I want to play out with. I know people do and I've tried it but it's not practical for me.

I use a Roland rd-88 stage piano for 99% of my piano stuff.
It has everything I’d want from presets for fm pads, synth leads, etc.
I had a minilogue that was great to learn on but ended selling it and got a monologue that I’ve used mostly as a bass synth.
Recently purchased a Korg opsix hoping to learn fm synthesis. So far I’ve messed around with it a couple times and now it sits on the shelf except when use the presets, which it works well for but doesn’t have the classic fm presets.

That's what's great about the Opsix, you can put all the classic DX7 patches on it.
I have all my favorite patches from the Dave Benson DX7 site.
here.
There's some great ones including the set that Suzanne Ciani did back in the day and a few 'Analog' series that sound CS80-ish.

Then, once you get them in there, you can add the great onboard effects and Filters to shape them into something new. I think the Opsix is a genius idea for a synthesizer. Does it sound as huge as my old Yamaha TX816? No but it's got a great sound and sounds 'now'.

Yesterday I bought a dead mk1 DX7 for $200. I would've rather died than pay $200 for a dead DX7 just a few years ago but here I am :D

I just repaired one for a friend and he had the Hypersynth Hcard. It's real game changer for the DX7. It's a bit expensive but kinda worth it.

Approximately late 60s early 70s. There is a brief shot of JPJones playing one in Led Zep Song Remains The Same film which came out in 76. Been meaning to do a demo into an interface.

I've had a couple since the late 90's when they could be found for a few hundred each:

Juno-106
Juno-60

I just fully serviced both and they sound great.
