Hey, Andy. Good to see more steelers over here. I've thought about picking up something like a 400 for C6. What tuning are you using on it?
I'm using an E9 tuning (like a ten string but without strings one and two. I've got six pedals on mine. The first three are a standard Emmons setup. Pedal 4 lowers the E's, P5 lowers the D to a C, and P6 raises the high E to an F# for quick pentatonic fills without raising the high B to a C# like P3.

Interesting. So, no levers on it? Did the Fender 400 ever have levers?

well, it arrived tonight! I have to say, it is a very intimidating instrument on first go. After familiarizing myself with the tuning a bit I feel like I could start to get the hang off this, but it'll definitely take some serious 'shedding.

Congrats! You're in for a hell of a ride. It is a bit intimidating at first. I would strongly suggest spending a lot of time on right hand technique first and foremost. There's a lot going on while playing but your right hand is the captain...err anchor. If you've done much in the way of fingerpicking on guitar, banjo, etc., you'll have a leg up. This book helped me get going - https://www.amazon.com/Pedal-Steel-Guit ... 082560169X" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;. Tons of info on the steel guitar forum as well!

Great so far! Had an opportunity to sit in with my friends band for a live video session recently...will post here when's it's available. Getting the hang of the basics but it'll be a long road until I feel technically proficient. I can definitely hold my own with other people now which feels like a big accomplishment for me.

That's great! It is a long road but very exciting when you figure out new licks and tricks. I should have a double neck in my possession soon. I'll share some pics!

I'm giving this old MSA sidekick a shot. Picked it up on the cheap and having a ton of fun so far. Right now just sounding like a hack version of Daniel Lanois. Not really interested in classic country styles, but still trying to learn the basics, which so far, seems like stuff on the web is tailored to country.

Don't be afraid to learn the country licks and techniques, it's all valid in the end and unless you're going for the original Hawaiian sound, those guys pretty much invented the pedal steel as we typically think of it...they know what they're doing! You can always apply that to whatever your style is later, but those basics are important. It seems to me, pedal steel players have a shit ton of theory knowledge, so that will come in handy in other aspects as well.

All that said, you should check out these improvisations I came across on the YouTubes.

He also does a pretty great version of the Better Call Saul theme on a nice Jazzmaster, so there's that. :-*

Is it possible he's a member here, and I'm just not aware??
The cool thing about fretless is you can hit a note...and then renegotiate.
