The criticism of Live not sounding as good as other DAWS came from two things, the first is that Live applies tempo/time stretching information to audio automatically to help you sync it with other information. Turn that off, and it's just a regular DAW.

The second was just ignorance, digital audio is digital audio, 2+2 is always 4. But a lot of people believe in voodoo.

What about Reason? I haven't used it for a while, but I think for somebody looking to get back into recording, it's really great stuff. I always really loved working with it, but Logic takes the cake these days since I'm on a Mac and I'm too cheap to pay for two DAWs.

Reason does audio now, too.

I haven't used Reason in forever, but it's great software. The audio side of it has one peculiarity, though, in that it is modelling software- that is, it's got the sound of some kind of console (Neve?) built in to the audio mixer tracks and from what I last understood, you can't turn it off.

It's probably nice, and low key, still it's something to be aware of. If it's you and the boyz doing creative work then sure, that's great, but you wouldn't want it for all audio applications (like sound design and such).
