I can run different pre-amps into whatever the usb thing is that goes into the computer right? Or would that kind of be pointless?
Pointless in what sense? You can plug in as many preamps as the interface(whatever usb thing) has inputs, but if the interface only has two channels everything will naturally be recorded into two tracks.

Logic comes with a decent drum machine, very easy to use.

True. The version that ships with Logic Express is OK. But EZDrummer is, IMO, always worth the money.

I have a real drum set at my house though, I am talking about recording that into the logic interface, or would it be easier for me to record them to the digital 8 track through a pre-amp and then dump them into the logic?

Sure. Miking drumkits is a royal PITA, though. If you can do it well, do that, but otherwise, consider MIDI.

I am generally pretty good at mic'ing drums, I can usually get a good recording of them on 1 track, I am not kidding, by good i mean, you can hear it all somehow.
I like how lo-fi it sounds. but I figure with a pre-amp running I could use several tracks and really narrow it down.

Except that you'll have to get a more expensive interface. The Firepod is nice, about 400€ if I remember correctly. Probably less in the U.S.

Don't ignore drum machines completely though, they can do a lot of crazy things no human drummer can.

If you go the Logic route, go with this also:

It's the M-Audio iControl (works with garageband and logic). It is honestly one of the cheapest/best controllers I have come across, plus it works with Logic flawlessly.

I am getting some m-audio box for free, so I guess I am going in this direction sort of, from here I will be relying heavily on my drummer and this forum for input. I have no idea where I am going with this stuff just yet.
