What's your plan for the vocoder? As a replacement for standard vocals? To compliment and/or support standard vocals? Or do you want them to be treated/listened to like one would a non-verbal instrument, like a clarinet or flute or other?
I’m using the Vocoder as more of a textural treatment in the choruses, more than anything. I wanted to try something that made me uncomfortable, which worked, but I ended up liking it more than I thought I would. I mean, it’s no EW&F, but that’s a pinnacle I’ll never reach.

¯\_(ツ)_/¯

When do we get to hear the track? I always enjoy your stuff.
Cheers!

This is my latest mix. No idea if it’s any good — I’ve lost all objectivity at this point. :D

Anyway, hope you enjoy it.

That sounds great!

Re: the original post: it’s not you, it actually is pretty difficult to get a vocoder sound to sit in a mix like that, particularly with most plug-in vocoders, and particularly with a pre-recorded vocal track - it’s much easier to “perform” the vocal input while hearing its effect on the synth input in real time, which means a hardware vocoder or recording through the plugin “live” (which can be tricky.)

Tips: “speaking” the vocal input part rather than singing it, and don’t be afraid to get weird with enunciation and diction - you’re going for the formant / EQ / spectrum of the sound, the pitch is nearly irrelevant. The sound used for the “synth” part is also very important - having something full-range, bright, and unfiltered (like a sawtooth synth sound or string machine sound) usually works well.

And don’t forget to play with sources that aren’t vocal / synth! Using a drum part to “vocode” a synth, guitar, white noise, or other part can also be cool.
