I like omnidirectional mics on my own voice. Proximity effect when using a cardioid mic + compression seems to bring out all the wrong stuff.

I'd recommend something with switchable patterns if you can swing it, particularly if she is recording other instruments.

And FWIW, I always, ALWAYS hear something weird in Rode mics. A boxiness, a lifelessness, a flatness. It's in all the rodes I've ever heard.

I've never experienced that with my NT-1A, quite the opposite in fact. I can't sing for shit though...

How about for mic'ing vocals for speaking instead of singing? I've got this cool idea for a podcast kind of thing (something with a plot and acted instead of just talking about whatever), but not sure about a decent mic for that.

If you can afford one, it's hard to go wrong with an AKG C414 - good for allsorts and not an industry standard LDC for decades for nothing.

Until/if I work/own a recording studio, that's quite a bit out of my price range. Know anything closer to the $150-$250 range?

One of the standard mics for spoken parts is an SM7B. But honestly if you get an SM58 or SM57 with a nice big foam windscreen you can do it for less than $100.

Good to know! I picked up an SM57 (with windscreen accessory) today for an instrument mic. I'll have to see how it sounds for spoken vocals. Thanks!
