Guitar recording into DAW ?
I am using Presonus Studio One 3.5 with ampire. When I use the amp and cab sim does it matter that the original guitar I recorded is distorted? I recorded the guitar track running through my tube budda pedal. If I played clean will that change the ampire / cab sim sound?

Yes and yes! What kind of tone are you going for?

So you used something like this?
http://www.musiciansfriend.com/amplifie ... tion-pedal" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
The signal chain is your guitar -> distortion pedal -> Presonus interface -> DAW?
If so, then yes, everything after your distortion pedal will be affected by the distortion pedal.
Maybe there's something I'm not seeing here about what you are doing.
Anyway, if you want a clean signal as well as a distorted signal, then that's easy enough to accomplish. You just record the guitar direct and clean, then use you can use a send or bus on the clean track to another track that has the Ampire on it, and blend those two tracks together.
http://www.musicradar.com/how-to/how-to ... n-your-daw" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
Alternatively, you could just record to two tracks simultaneously, one clean and one with the Ampire plug in.
Still alternatively, you could use a send from your interface (if you have one) into your distortion pedal, than back into your interface if you wanted to get that particular pedal's distortion sound.

Actually I just guessed as to what your interface is. But you must have some kind of USB interface or Firewire interface, right? What actually carries the signal into the computer?

I'm using a Scarlet Focusrite interface.....I guess what i'm asking is: Will the ampire amp sim/cab sim sound better with a clean guitar sound? I have been recording guitar> tube pedal>DAW.

Re: Guitar recording into DAW ?
I mean there's no rules about that- it would be hard to say what would sound better with your rig and your sound. Whatever comes after that tube pedal will sound like the tube pedal, but if you are sure that the tube pedal is adding what you want then keep it in the chain. But you are somewhat limiting yourself that way since you'd never be able to take the tube pedal out of the equation.
But maybe you are using the tube pedal as a sort of tube pre-amp rather than a distortion pedal, which is pretty common, and can certainly be a warming and compressing effect that would work well with whatever amp sims you have coming after it. If it's working for you, then why change it?

Re: Guitar recording into DAW ?
I think you'd want to go direct, sans pedal. Like Larry said, you could always add to that signal but you'd never be able to subtract that pedal. Plus if you had a clean DI track you could always opt to re-amp it later.
But, I mean, if it sounds good, then by all means.

It just did not feel right playing clean for these songs. I will mess around with it.
Thank You

You definitely should go direct. Put on the amp sim and turn monitoring on, so that you can actually hear your guitar dirty (from the sim) as you play.budda12ax7 wrote:It just did not feel right playing clean for these songs. I will mess around with it.

No one said you had to play clean. If you run the signal in clean, and then add a virtual amp, then you can hear the sound of the virtual amp but not be committed to it... in fact, you can change it as you go, you can also take the same audio track and make a copy of that and it on another track, which you can also put a different virtual amp on.budda12ax7 wrote:It just did not feel right playing clean for these songs. You can also take the second track and drag it just a small amount of time differently than the original track, maybe no more than some milliseconds, which can make it sound even bigger. Pan one deep left and the other deep right. That sort of stuff.
You can also use parallel effects like reverb and compression and such.
Really, once you start with a good clean sound, the sky is the limit as far as in the box processing. When I say "good", I just mean that it's clean, that there's a good signal to noise ratio, etc.

Re: Guitar recording into DAW ?
If it sounds good, it's ok. That said the Scarlet has some pretty good preamps for an inexpensive interface (I have one) and I cant see much benefit in over-driving them before the A to D conversion. Plus, there are a million free plug-in that you can add to your DAW to add the distortion/overdrive that you want. (I don't know the Presonus, but it must allow you to use VST plug ins).
Also, as noted above, recording the guitar clean means that you can always modify it later. If you record it distorted, then you'll have to re-record it if you need to change something.

i second this! this is one of my go to tricks that i use on the majority of my guitar tracks. works well with certain synth leads and arps as well!Larry Mal wrote: You can also take the second track and drag it just a small amount of time differently than the original track, maybe no more than some milliseconds, which can make it sound even bigger. I recorded some stuff clean, then added the overdrive and cab sim from the Ampire software, still messing with it.
