Antipodeans.. they're everywhere.

Post by BlueSparkle » Thu Mar 01, 2018 7:54 pm

G'day.

I have to state at the outset I was never really an offset type of bloke.

I decided to join as I'm suddenly an owner of a 95 DMJM JM.

It's got an unusual Blue Sparkle finish.
I've seen a lot of JM's over the years, and this has to be the least common finish I've seen.

I'm not the kind of guy who hoards axes, but I still seem to have a reasonably broad assortment.
I'm not a brand-loyalist either (I modify to suit my playing requirements, or buy something that suits)
This is the first and only JM owned, probably will be.

How did I come by it?
I was GASing for a JV strat with a maple neck something shocking. Weeks and weeks of store trolling, online trolling - all in the quest for something specific.
Nothing USA made in the current new product lineup had a 'feel' that I liked, save for a custom shop. Money that can be better spent elsewhere in my case.
Then this JM popped up for sale, along with a strat from the same seller.
I went to check out the strat, and couldn't stop looking at the JM. I picked it up and it played as nice as the strat.... so a tough decision had to be made.

I bought it primarily because of the colour. I'm not afraid to admit it, but I didn't buy this because of the offset's specific ergonomics, the sound or the 'different' shape.
It has a mustang bridge in it, still buzzes a bit and needs some truss rod adjustment and intonation, maybe a fret dressing if I want to get really pedantic.
It looks like it was bought and never played. narrow tall frets, 7.25 radius, white pearloid pickguard.

It's a keeper.

Might find some interesting info here, maybe even someone else with a sparkle.

cheers

Are those pickups p90's in a JM housing?
The finish is gorgeously eye catching. I can see why that swayed your decision making.
A product of a late 70's homesteading experiment.

The Pickups are McNelly 46/58's - I kept the original PU's and put them in a box - in case I ever sell it.

There was nothing wrong with the MIJ PU's - in fact, surprisingly decent for a strat-wound bobbin. They were on the higher side of 8K if I recall correctly.

I just prefer the much richer neck pickup. McNelly's are very very nice and quite a bit of gain in the wide bobbin.
