Not Waving - Animals

I jut got the new Not Waving elpee 'Animals' (2X12 wrapped in a Guy Featherstone 'glitch Memphis' sleeve) and thought it might be the time to start a thread. Not Waving is Alessio Natalizia, formerly half of the brilliant Walls and compiler of the totally clued up Mutazione: Italian Electronic & New Wave Underground 1980-1988.

Animals marks a slight departure from previous Not Waving records, or at least pre 'Get Serious'the acid seizure Diagonal ( Powell's Record label) released late last year.

Previously Not Waving had specialised in cerebral, post industrial, giallo lit atmospherics (check out Human Capabilities or Voices or his split with kindred spirit the brilliant Pye Corner Audio) but the new record, steps aside from this, I'd describe it as post acid, post punk, inelegant as that might seem. It's a brilliant record for the head and the body, no matter what way you slice it.

Sometimes I think you are just pulling our leg.

A few years ago my doctor was concerned I may have a brain tumor. He ordered a full MRI.

If any of you want to know what an MRI is like, crawl inside one of the shipping boxes your use to mail guitars, keep perfectly still, and play Not Waving Head Body 9 times in a row. I'm not joking. That is the sound of an MRI.

It's OK I used to get this feeling every time someone started a thread on Grunge N Roses. At first I thought it was all lolcatz hilarious and arch post modern plonker pulling, you know; 'check my 'vintage' and oh so ironic Twisted Sister tee shirt, accessorised with a monocle, waxed moustache, skinny lederhosen and Roman sandals'. Then I realised folk were actually serious, so it takes all sorts.

I can't afford my own MRI machine and in any case no one makes one that would match my furniture. I doubt many folk have the juice to have one at home so my top tip for the day is; same yerself a few bob and just buy a good stereo and the new Not Waving elpee. I'd also bet it's pretty hard to dance in the MRI.

Hahahaha! All valid points. Every one. Dancing was impossible in the MRI. This certainly is danceable.

Been waiting for this release for a while since hearing some tracks online (I think both get serious and animals) and both tracks have been excellent, thanks for reminding me it's out. I had no idea that he curated that comp which is very good.

Noisepunk and Darcy, cool you like it. I think it's a great album, deeper and more melodic than it first appears, I think it's going to catch on fast.

Not Waving’s Ecstatic label grip a bendy-as-f**k live recording of (deep breath) “alternatively-tuned polyphonic multi-rhythmic live-mixed live-generated parameter based unrendered unsequenced spontaneous improvised electronic music” performed (?) by Novo Line at Berlin’s Sameheads club night in December, 2015.

Using a software program on a 720kb floppy written in 1988, run on two x Atari ST PCs using only era-consistent hardware FM synthesis via MIDI, it’s nothing if not authentically retro, but also proves there’s latent, vital life in outmoded gear, provided you’re willing to look hard enough.

Like his aforementionedFor Promotional Use Only 12”, (basically sending the Valium Troops into 2Unlimited's territory) everything's yoked to a mesmerisingly sluggish pace, which is perhaps necessary as the spiky, curdling, and discordant sequence of events carries so much repetitive - yet subtly morphing - information that it may be genuinely psychotomimetic at higher tempos.

To be honest, we’re a bit baffled at mention of his current actions “reflecting research in the fringe fields of electrical theory with relation to pythagorean tuning systems”, but it should prompt some interesting wikipedia mooches later on.

Ultimately, it sounds like something hypothesised by boffins at IPEM’s secret darkrooms circa ’88, and that cannot be a bad thing in any freak's estimations.
