Gwenno

Great stuff in the general area of Broadcast and/or Stereolab. I'm surprised there's not already a thread.

I've got it, it's in the pile and fingers crossed I'm hopefully on it later today.

I listened to roughly 40 seconds of a sample and I was on the buy train.

I'm not, there's generally little interest in anything new on here (unless it's some old band from 25 years ago or more reanimating the corpse), I've absolutely given up starting threads or even posting in Song of the Day. It's just howling into the black empty vacuum of space.

I put some new songs up there. :( :'(

Funny that this lady is from the Pipettes, I have a CD of theirs and it didn't stick and now she's broke off into space.

I had heard of The Pipettes, but never heard them before I heard the Gwenno record. I liked the record so I figured "if The Pipettes are anything like this, I need to backtrack." I watched about 10 seconds of a YouTube video before concluding that the two are nothing alike.

Yes. very different. I admit that it makes me have a bit of a cynical reaction to her. Is she another one of these talented & attractive women who gets put through the pop music factory as "they" try to figure out a way to make money off her with different genres before they find one that sticks? [See Alanis Morissete, Avril Lavigne, Jessica Simpson, etc.] I suppose an album in Welsh indicates that she's not exactly the tool of the man or anything and determining her own course.

Like Shadowplay, I like to initially listen to stuff without the videos so I don't have to add any of my extra biases [Imagine if Gwenno was wearing overalls! ]. I'm not sure how much her stuff really knocks me out, but I'd like to hear Shadow's take.

I'm hoping she's more pinafore than dungarees but I hope that with pretty much everyone. Hopefully get it on tonight, I asked the kids and I'm told it's good and not just a simple Broadcast rip off, they tell me there's at least one track that would fit right on Wild In Blue OST.

It's Broadcast-ish, but not a rip off. Some of the more poppy tracks remind me of early New Order musically.

Mrs S tells me this is a minor wake up call to check my head because I went to file this and...discovered I already owned it on another label but it's still worth it for extra CD and I it's not as if I haven't found an unplayed record before. After some extensive cross examination it appears one of the kids opened my package, played it and put it back alphabetically and not in the new records section and I apparently bought them their own copy.

Anyway, a very good record, it's not one of the predominant retro futurist mildly radiophonic tracks but I much taken with the generally atypical Fratolish Hiang Perpeshki which has a bit of rolled up sleeve italiocoldwave about it.

Going to see her next month.

Is it at all like Guns N'Roses?
Back in those days, everyone knew that if you were talking about Destiny's Child, you were talking about Beyonce, LaTavia, LeToya, and Larry.

More like Howitzers and Roses, like GnR turned up to eleven; more chaps, more bandannas, more cycling shorts, seriously stove pipe hats, more sexism, more racism, more ism's of all kinds and that includes jism, more homophobia, more real man stuff, jeans that aren't just ripped they are shredded, more solos, more tattoos, more bleach, bigger paunches, two cigarettes hanging out of the rhythm guitarists mouth, full on gang of robots sexually assaulting a woman on the sleeve and an absolute refusal to change it for Pussy Wal Mart.

That sounds like the kind of music that would keep homosexual tendencies at bay for a little while! Sign me up!
