OSG goes OST...Soundtracks...

I've really enjoyed a few recent soundtracks and I'm overjoyed to see contemporary artists doing bespoke scores instead of the whole snore inducing 'ipod on shuffle' rhubarb many films go for (and which always seem to comprise the bulk of any Best Soundtrack of 2014 list).

71'(David Holmes)

Samples

Hannibal TV series (Brian Reitzell) - comes as a tasty but quite pricey 8x12 set.

Bloodfest (from Mizumono)

Beyond The Black Rainbow (Sinoia Caves) - thanks to Slow Pop for recommending it to me.

Forever Dilating Eye

Run Program - Sentionauts

Under The Skin (Mica Levi)

Love

Lipstick to Void

Stoker(Clint Mansell)

In Full Bloom

The Hunter Plays the Game

I'm mildly hyped about John Carpenters' Lost Themes, not strictly a soundtrack and I've only got it on pre order (think I'll have it in about a week) but I'm pretty hyped for it.!!

There's also been a nice pile of old unprinted or hard to get soundtracks finding their way to modern release like;

Lubos Fiser - Morgiana

Nicola Piovani ‎– Il Profumo Della Signora In Nero - The Perfume Of The Lady In Black

Bruno Nicolai - The Case Of The Bloody Iris

So has anyone got an recommendations? Ideally ones with a vinyl release (I'd kill for a vinyl pressing of Jon Hopkins - Monstersand Graeme Revell's soundtrack to the otherwise forgettable Dead Calm) but I guess digital is OK too. I'm not a huge soundtrack buff (often an incredibly obsessive collecting realm), I just pick up the odd one through the year.

Under the Skin was a perfect treat for the senses in every single way. And not least of all because of the perfectly matched score.

Sort of applicable; I'd thoroughly recommend this. As with all Apparats work, it's stunning.

Agreed.

Her mixtape ' Feeling Romantic Feeling Tropical Feeling Ill' for Demdike Stare's label DDS this year was excellent too. I'm no fan of cassette as a format (you get a DL with it too) but it's a fantastic suite of music.

Absolutely applicable, I'll check it out.

Erik Blood's Center of Gravity is an overlooked one that immediately pops to mind.

great suggestions on Hannibal, Under the Skin and Stoker. loved Stoker when i saw it in the theater 8)

anyway, i'm a big fan of Mark Isham's score for The Black Dahlia. the film itself was a dog's breakfast, but i thought the noir-ish music was evocative:

The Two of Us

The Dahlia

Madeline

of course, the gold standard for this sort of thing can be found

There's nothing better than drinking whiskey and listening to "blade runner blues".

Yeah spot on, I went with recent releases to get things going (and hopefully get some records bought) but this and the Mark Isham are good scores.

One recent soundtrack I forgot was Simon Fisher Turner's - The Epic of Everest, which is the official film of the Mallory and Irving Everest attempt. It's incredible, grand, mournful and emotionally affecting stuff, created with a roster of interesting cadres and it's very nicely packaged (with thrown in CD) too. Streams here.

Btw any one wanting a treat should check out Deux Filles Simon's group from the post punk era. You had to be around at the time to fully understand the origin story (two French female orphans) and how some folk were fooled (including me), of course it's fucking obvious they were men in drag but I was 13 or 14 and if I'm honest probably didn't give the story much thought. There was a decent interview with Simon on The Quietus last year where he talks about his remarkable life and career.

Simon also did scores for Derek Jarman and I really like his score for The Great White Silence (of the Terra Nova Expedition). Maybe only Tomas Koner gets closer to evoking the forbidding and fathomless expanses of the Poles.

I'm actually really big into my soundtracks and keeping up with current releases as well as researching old classic scores takes up a lot of my time. My main focus is old horror and exploitation, but there is a ton of new stuff coming out as well that is incredible. The Sinoia Caves Beyond the Black Rainbow LP is an excellent example. The really dark, synth heavy stuff is what gets me most excited, the Surf Nazis Must Die soundtrack that came out last year was awesome!

Like Shadowplay I'm incredibly excited about the new Carpenter album, his old scores with Howarth are some of the most incredible, recognisable and effective examples of horror scoring, Halloween 3 is probably my favourite of his.

There are a handful of labels that put an immense amount of effort into these scores and there are other constantly popping up which is leading to a bit of a market flood, there's some amazing stuff to be found, but there are also a good amount of "miss" releases, having a knowledge of and affection for the films themselves and the associated nostalgia can also help the perception of the quality of the particular release and Some scores also stand alone as a piece of music, whereas others lose some effect when removed from the imagery.

Grantland just had a really good Q/A with the man about the upcoming record:

John Carpenter Still Wants To Kick Ass, Play Synths and Chew Bubble Gum

David, all those are great soundtracks! I didn't know about 71, I'm going to have to track down a copy (film and score).

Kind of, sort of a soundtrack...Patrick Cowley School Daze. Patrick Cowley was big in the disco scene, but before he did that he wrote odd ball songs in college that he later sold to Fox Studios. Fox Studios used his songs in several gay porn films and they are super eerie and weird.

71' is a good, unpretentious and straight ahead film, it weird, Jack O'Connell is getting so much press for Unbroken but they act like 71' doesn't exist. the soundtrack has possibly the track title of last year; .Posh Cunts Telling Thick Cunts To Kill Poor Cunts! The music's more 70-81 but I like it that way!

That Patrick Cowley compilation is excellent, I'm drifting way off topic but the Patrick Cowley George Socarros LP Catholic is good. Check out Robot Children (do you love your)

Under The Skin's soundtrack really made the film for me. It's a great example of a score elevating and defining the tone of a film, I loved it so damn much.
