Also "eternal keeper of the ultimate" SOUND?
I am really curious if the highly praised (by Neil Young) Pono system delivers what he promises: http://www.mypono.com/ or http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pono_%28audio_format%29

A Rolling Stone report on Pono relayed generally positive anticipation, but quoted rock star Jim James as asking, "I've already bought Aretha Franklin's 'Respect' a lot of times. Do I have to buy it again?"

I agree, always back to the well again and again...and again. I'd love to see a study on who has remastered the most? I have a perception that some of the grandees seem to do it annually.

Btw Linn have their own system called Studio Masterwhich has been running for a while.

I've always been into records, never got into CD's unless I was forced to and MP3 doesn't bother me since It's only for out and about. Most potable players have pathetic tiny wee drives so they will really need to sort that before releasing massive files.

Funny thing about Neil Young shitting on Compact Disc is that he was apparently more than happy to release his albums ina format he had a low opinion of, he was already doing pretty nicely, could he not have made a stand then? I've got cloth ears and I could tell Compact Disc was sus when it came out.

D
Are you loathsome tonight?

My personal opinion also is that if you're listening to music in the subway, on your way to work or whatever, it's good to think back to the early 90s: worn out tapes, played over and over again on cheap walkmen. That was the sound. Compared to my old mixtapes from my teenage days, most mp3s are of really good quality.
Of course, nothing beats my vintage (inherited) 1950's tube radio with my vintage 1960s record player - that's the sound I want to have at home, but I don't need to carry that heavy brick to work, so my mobile player's fine for that.

Weld and year of the horse are pretty good for the big live ol black sound. Dangerbird on weld is pretty stunning.

WELD is one of the best live albums ever. I still sample ARC's feedback for my live performances.

Also, Mirrorball doesnt get enough love from a lot of NY fans.

+1 on Weld...I listened to Mirrorball for the first time yesterday and I liked it...it is different musically...but in a way, still the same style :)

http://www.thrasherswheat.org/sound.htm

I'm assuming most of you have seen this already, but just in case, check this out. From what I've gathered his preferred Deluxe has a factory-installed but atypical transformer with different values compared to most (forgive my ignorance of electronics). Somehow he has signal going from the Deluxe to the Magnatone and Baldwin Exterminator, maybe other cabs as well, with a Fender reverb unit in there somewhere. Again the Wizzer is so genius yet I have not heard of any amp company following his lead to make something similar.

I love the Dead Man film and soundtrack so much, yet I feel like they overdid the dialog tracks on the album: almost as much dialog as music. This is one of the few albums I think should be rereleased with fewer tracks, I have an iTunes playlist with just the music which I would love to have on vinyl. Would also appreciate a vinyl rerelease of all the Crazy Horse stuff since the 90's, as it is rare and expensive.

Really want to build/mod a variation on Old Black, probably try to get as close to the same specs as possible, with different aesthetics. Love Old black's aesthetics, just don't feel like copying them exactly. I'm thinking maybe really worn barn wood with natural finish and worn chromed bronze, something similar to our own Harvester's work. Except I have back problems and probably would hurt myself playing a solidbody Les Paul for a long time. Semi-hollow, or would it be sacrilege?

Marsh Amps makes this Deluxe: http://store.marshamps.com/product_info ... gq08ua6ec6, the add copy makes allusions to Neil's sound and special transformers for more oomph. More headroom though? Is that what we want? Maybe just louder is enough.

There are also pedals to mimic the Magnatone vibrato: http://bigtonemusic.com/maggie.html http://www.bigfootfx.com/
Magnatone is also reissuing vintage amps, or maybe new vintage-inspired amps, I can't tell: http://www.magnatoneusa.com/products/stereo-twilighter/

If only I wasn't a broke grad student!

They're not all so heavy. My current Les Paul is barely over 8lbs. No chmabering or anything.

Forgive my ignorance, but who is selling non-chambered Les Pauls these days? I was under the impression that Gibson LPs are all chambered these days, maybe I'm wrong.

I read it on the internets that all but historics are weight relieved or chambered. I dunno if this is true. But hey, it's on the intermanets, it must be true.

Agreed. Like Old Black reinterpreted as a Duo Jet, for instance. Now THAT would be cool! 8)
