The Drones
Gareth Liddiard is one of my favourite contemporary songwriters, and an incredible guitar player. Dan Luscombe is great as well.
I saw the Drones twice over the weekend, they are one of the best live bands going around IMO.
And Gareth plays a sweet modded Jag!

Yep. Amazing band and fantastic lyrical storyteller. It's been a while since I saw them live.

Re: The Drones
I'm bumping up this thread a bit...The Drones are my favorite band-from-nowadays and they seem to go largely unnoticed in Europe, for reasons that elude me.
I saw them live in Grenoble, France eleven years ago when they released Gala Mill. There were only thirty of us in the audience and Gareth Liddiard was - rightly so - pissed off to be faced by an unresponsive audience of few that didn't speak English. They still played a great show.
Their latest album is incredible:

IMHO one of the great modern pop records of the last few years, along with Scott Walker's Bish Bosch and Bowie's Blackstar. The offset theme is there too, Liddiard has been making some great sounds with his modded Jaguar (PAF in the bridge, Tele pickup in the neck).
The bands seems to have gone into a hiatus, but Liddiard's new project, TropicalFuckStorm, sounds very promising:

Re: The Drones
One of my favourite bands from recent years. Liddiard's wit is rapier-sharp and they sound very Australian but in their own distinct non-Oz-rock way.

Re: The Drones
Well, almost two years later...
I went to see TFS in Paris last week-end and man oh man were they good. I guess touring for 18 months straight does that to your band! They're wrapping up their European tour on the 21st of June, then back to Australia, then back to the US, then back to Europe in November. What I mean is - go and see them if you get a chance
The record is really good, in a twisted kind of way. It kept going in the strange groovy direction the last Drones record was taking. The lyrics are still funny & horribly modern, in a good way. I don't think I've listened to any other record that many times in the last few years.

Thanks for this!
