Groundhogs - Split
I’m irritated that I’ve only just recently learned of these guys.

I picked the seven off that for 50p in a charity shop a few years ago, not worth even as much as a new seven inch these days and just a radio edit of the album version but well worth 50p of anyones money.
I love her song Lone Ranger off the Nasty Gal elpee

The Hunt. Agreed David.shadowplay wrote: ↑Mon Jun 24, 2019 1:30 amIt's worth taking time to check out Tony McPhee's solo stuff. His side long, righteous and raging anti fox hunting track 'The Hunt' is quite incredible, like a slug trail linking UK prog and Throbbing Gristle.
One of the finest, angriest solo records ever made, when it drops you'll be forever addicted.
I think he was splitting up with his wife when he made it and there's some really genuinely angry and very real solo blues guitar tracks on there too. No fakes here.
Everyone should listen to the Groundhogs. The Live at Leeds LP is incredible too, they were supporting the Stones, can you imagine? They sound like they're from a different universe, almost like Can at times, proper squalling octave fuzz Karoli-esque guitar. No posturing. Tony McPhee is a god.

Yeah the 'riding' phase where you can just feel Tony stringing the head high wire across the field.mijmog wrote: ↑Wed Jul 03, 2019 7:28 amThe Hunt. ^ yeah its definitely a great antidote to a lot of style over substance 70s rock stuff, McPhee played with John Lee Hooker early on, he's the real deal. Lyrics are worth digging into as well, lots of protest stuff going on. Underrated.
Here he is tearing it up on a Mustang fitted with two Tele pickups:
Groundhog Blues - live in some dodgy pub
---
Currently listing to: "Parable" by John Abercrombie of the album "Characters".
Obsessed with this currently: the nu-age tech mandolin playing of John Abercrombie. This track seems to dodge the soul-less muso nature of most virtuoso soloist self-congratulation, it has real emotion, tension and release.

I’ve been spinning “The Hunt” and some Groundhogs, too. It’s an education for me, to be sure, and I’m loving it.
