B-52's Appreciation

When I was three or four I bought a B-52's cassette tape (Brush Fire and Roam) from a yard sale because it was in a tie-dye sleeve and they became my first favorite band. Years later, and I still think they're pretty awesome.

Anyone else a fan?

I L-U-V luv that album. Deadbeat Club and Topaz are great tracks from it too and it speaks volumes that despite having heard Love Shack a gazillion times it still never fails to tickle my fancy.

I'm maybe in the minority in that I prefer that stuff to their earlier Planet Claire/Rock Lobster-era incarnation.

It's all great stuff- I'd gladly listen to Love Shack over Yellow Submarine (which also doesn't bother me as much as it does other people) any day.

I just bought a copy of Cosmic Thing over the holidays, and a copy of Private Idaho on vinyl a few years prior, but I need to definitely expand my collection.

This makes me want to dig and find my early albums of theirs (vinyl- I forget which ones). I have the Time Capsule CD too, it's a pretty good representation of their early and late stuff.

I like all of it, but the early stuff is incredible. And the dancing... :-*

I love the B52's, well the first four albums anyway. I think Fred Schneider is one of the great frontmen, I mean check this out! I am not very sentimental musically but I must admit to warm and fuzzy feelings towards those albums, they were so different from the dark music I was and am into. I saw them a few times in the early 80's and I can hardly remember it beyond knowing that the gigs were amazing and they put on a show. I am not saying Love Shack is a bad tune or something but it lacks something for me.

One thing worth tracking down is the seven of Rock Lobster/52 girls it's way more lo-fi, not better or worse but different. Ricky Wilson was an awesome guitarist, like check out Give ME Back My Manfor joyous tight surf-funk

Some of my favourites that are (slightly) off the beaten path. I am not setting aside the well quoted Dirty Back Roads etc but these show a different sidehttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ESAZFiD9rAU

Mesopotamia this is great to dance to.

Song for a Future Generation There's a good drinking game that goes with this i.e " Hi my name's David and I like chilli sauce on almost everything"

I've been a fan since 1980 and do play them from time to time... I like it all but still favor the earlier recordings. Same goes for Devo...

Same here. I always liked both bands. I like the 52's later stuff as well as the earlier.

I'm from Akron, OH and knew of Devo from way back. It was cool to see them return in the late 70s and play the Akron Civic Theater after they made it.

My first 'real' concert was the B-52s Cosmic Thing tour when I was 13. I've always loved everything from that era and before, but they kinda lost me a few years later with that "Good Stuff" song. I think I also hit a saturation point with the readhead's voice plastered across the airwaves with Iggy Pop, R.E.M. and whatever else she guested on.

I still dig it when a real B-52s song comes up in the shuffle, either on the iPod or the radio; there are a couple local stations here that know what they are doing sometimes.

Private Idaho, Quiche Lorraine, Butter Beans, and so on- I always thought it was amusing that they found such sympathy with the darkie crowds. A bit of sunshine to brighten up our gloomy minds I guess...

And welcome back Shadowplay- we've missed you.

B-52s (especially the early stuff), DEVO and XTC were on constant play, growing up. I still love that stuff!!

I should add King Crimson and Adrian Belew to that list, too...

And welcome back, Shadowplay!! :)

kate pierson's voice is angelic. wild planet is always in my party record stack.

for a nice b-52s/king crimson tie-in, sara lee, who played bass on cosmic thing, was in the league of gentlemen with robert fripp.

I think their first album is still my favorite. As many times as I've heard it, I think "Rock Lobster" is a masterpiece.
