do we call it a cover if someone takes a full song that already sounds a backing track and actually make it interesting by adding lyrics? if so

Wilco - Marquee Moon. Nels Cline nails the guitar parts. Vocals perhaps leave something to be desired. Interesting take on the long improvised solo.

Stairway ... Whippersnappers ... Bangles-inspired 'slightly' tongue-in-cheek but cool cover ... 1989 ...

If you hate Stairway with a passion as I do you may find this a very suitable fate for the song .. if not try the similarly satyrical bluegrass version ... from the same series of invited 're-envisionings' ...

I Start Counting - Ra! Ra! Rawhide Now I think on the original Rasputin as something of a holy relic but I still enjoy this one every 20 years.
Boney M - Rasputin Killer bassline, great lyrics...and to missquote the hateful Three Lions...Bobby Dancing. Fuck that crowd are so unworthy, even in 1978 as a pretentious young post punker I'd be losing my mind...they deserve dragged by the feather cut to the full Rasputin death experience.

I would
super recommend buying the new Carla Dal Forno cassette 'Top of the Pops' it's an absolutely brilliant selection of six wonderful covers of female fronted artists ranging from household names to underground heroines and perhaps even worth it as an introduction to some of the featured artists if they weren't on your radar. it wasn't publicised much ahead of release but you get a DL card with it if you're not down with tapes.
Carla dal Forno - Lay Me Down
Renee - Lay Me Down
Carla dal Forno - Blue Morning
The Kiwi Animal - Blue Morning (no linky which is a shame since they are really good band)
This is on the same elpee
Carla Dal Forno - A Silver Key Can Open An Iron Lock Somewhere
Liliput (formerly Kleenex) - A Silver Key Can Open An Iron Lock Somewhere
Carla Dal Forno - Give Me Back My Man
The B-52's - Give Me Back My Man
Carla Dal Forno - Summertime Sadness
Lana Del Rey - Summertime Sadness
Carla Dal Forno - No Romance
The Fates - No Romance
Brilliant IMO
Ah shit here's the whole thing as one link;

Holly Miranda did a
toy piano flecked cover of that you might want to listen to. Not really my sort of thing but she's great on
Black Crow by Beyond the Wizards sleeve and if folk want something with guitars check out the
'Midnight Version'.
My great cover is a cover by C.A.R (Chloe Raunet ex of
Battant) of a slightly obscure but brilliant post punk single called 'Flight and Pursuit' by Indifferent Dance Centre. It's billed as a remix but it's a cover and I'd wholeheartedly recommend C.A.R's own music be it in
collaboration with Red Axes from Tel Aviv or
on her own. I really rate Chloe's cold eyed fuck off vocals.
Indifferent Dance Centre - Flight & Pursuit (C.A.R's Indifferently Humble Refix)
Indifferent Dance Centre - Flight & Pursuit a must have if you like Young Marble Giants, Weekend, Antena , AC Marias, Anna Domino, The Raincoats and even moderns like Carla Dal Forno.

Roisin Murphy - Ancora Tu The post about Italian covers by Mike Patton while not being my thing reminded me of Roisin Murphy's wonderful Mi Senti 2X12 of slightly later Italian pop covers. Her voice is gorgeously smoked out on this.
