Also the first Grails album called "burden of hope" is really damn good modern post rock.
Also also if we're really talking post-rock then you gotta get "Laughing Stock" by Talk Talk.
+10000 on grails.
actually theres a lot of good bands who play instrumental music which is not post rock.

In respect to GBYE, I have never seen a more pretentious show in my lifetime and I stand by that. I have seen some bad shows, look where I live and have some faith in that fact. Now this is a point where i explain to you that music in and of itself is not just inherently amazing to every person, it's subjective, you like em, well good for you.
I can tell you this though, I have plenty of heart and so do a bunch of people who are just tired of drivel. One small edit and thought here, maybe it's the fans and the clones that make them so grating, in fact I will give them a spin today and see what i think posthumously just to humor folks.
enjoy your day.
I thought DMST has members of GYBE?

It does and they play better in it
I used to be cool, now I just complain about prices.

Never heard Do Make Say Think before; they're very good- like Broken Social Scene's better work to a higher degree- but honestly, I keep waiting for the vocals too come in... it just doesn't seem to carry itself on it's own quite as much as more orchestral post-rock, for me anyway.
Anyways, thanks for bringing them to my attention; I wouldn't be surprised if they wound up in my collection.

I'm surprised Spiderland by Slint is yet to be mentioned, it commits the crime of adding vocals, but they were one of the first post-rock bands, if not the first in America

True. Although I think it's just a general failure of a lot of people to just assume you mean instrumental when you say post-rock. Hell, At The Drive-In are post rock really... it's a pretty broad genre that really just means anything that's taken traditional rock 'standards' and moved away from it. Bit like the old 'emotional hardcore' debate
The title of the thread does say 'instrumental' though

I'm assuming at least that pano's only commenting on instrumental post-rock.

I'm more into instrumental PRE-rock, myself.
Seriously. I went and saw OSG member Philmanatee's band last Friday and they played a slew of Shadows numbers, and it has awakened a Hank B Marvin adoration neuron.
Melodic, tasteful and captivating.

These guys are one of my favorite instrumental bands- i suppose some songs could be classified as post-rock, but they're self defined as spy music, so it's kind of loungey, kind of surfy, kind of ambient electronic.

I'm handing out +1's like a machine built for that specific purpose, but the Laughing Stock recommendation of course gets extra love from me.
Fans of Slint should also check out Rodan and Rachel's for more of the Louisville scene. I wonder what they put in the water there in those days...
Anyhoo. Some local bands for your enjoyment, all of whom are pretty damn intense live:
Circle. They've been putting out what feels like 5 albums a year since the early 90's. Played on John Peel, done an album with Faust, etc. Not always instrumental, and stylistically all over the place, pretty much running the gamut from psych-folk to hardcore to math rock.
