i can't get down with gybe, it's to formulaic for me, i dig the slow riot for new kanada disc but outside of that they never did it for me

polvo doesn't fit into this category, they are one of my top 10 bands, trust me, they go in their own little category called AWESOME SHIT

+1 Polvo are great.

quarterpound wrote:They're not new, and not always instrumental, but they released a new album recently and they probably fall into the vein you mention -- oh yeah and they're the best band of all time - Polvo.

Ill try to bring a clip later.

This one... will do:

Well, I guess I knew there was a reason I loved this place ;) ...tbh the most slinty polvo songs don't seem to be shared on youtube. And I think, to better Spiderland's drama, you've really got to look toward either something like Blonde Redhead, or doom metal, like Sleep:

I find it hard to listen to any post rock anymore. I'm just not into it like I used to be. I've always loved Mono, and I'll probably keep seeing them live just because, but I honestly can't think of the last time I put on one of their cds. With that said, I was never really a huge fan of Explosions in the Sky. I always felt they were one of the most pretentious bands of the genre. They never created the orchestral-vibe or the mournful sadness that Mono created, yet they seemed to take themselves a lot more seriously... Just my horribly biased opinion.

you really don't hear the formula in all their best songs? I mean, seriously, i can listen to them and tell you what notes they are playing and it's just a rinse and repeat over and over a=on all the coolest parts. Sorry, they are just not that rad.

I'm not usually one for the post rock (whatever) but Mr. Somersett, may I say that that song was pretty badass. Kinda reminded me of something... maybe something off SY's Murry Street. idk but its cool.

I don't know if this is in defense of Explosions in the sky or is completely damning, but I listened to their first few albums on repeat for months while writing my dissertation. Pretty and worked great. (godspeed were too abrupt. mogwai are mogwai. Sigur ros weren't interesting after a few records, Brian Eno is too ambient, etc).

The post-rock boom in the 90s such as Tortoise (-- you have to say it with a French accent, btw) was exciting for a bit, but I have to say I enjoy the Krautrock stuff they were ripping off way more than them. (Can, Neu!, La Dusseldorf, Amon Düül, etc).

My tastes now lean towards music where you can't see guys counting under their breath.

I'm of the opinion that if you aren't moved by Godspeed You! Black Emperor's music you have no heart.

Explosions in the Sky don't deserve to lick the shit off of Godspeed's shoes.

Mogwai are brilliant, but spotty. Not to mention much more formulaic than Godspeed. Two of their most recent albums are even sequenced similarly (Auto Rock --> Glasgow Mega Snake is identical to I'm Jim Morrison, I'm Dead --> Batcat)

to me it's not a question of a band being spotty or whatever, to me it's what i want to hear and perhaps to a degree how pretentious i think the band is. In respect to GBYE, I have never seen a more pretentious show in my lifetime and I stand by that. I have seen some bad shows, look where I live and have some faith in that fact. Now this is a point where i explain to you that music in and of itself is not just inherently amazing to every person, it's subjective, you like em, well good for you.
I can tell you this though, I have plenty of heart and so do a bunch of people who are just tired of drivel. One small edit and thought here, maybe it's the fans and the clones that make them so grating, in fact I will give them a spin today and see what i think posthumously just to humor folks.

enjoy your day.
