The Gentleman Losers

Post by shadowplay » Thu Jul 30, 2009 6:18 am

I have been totally loving the new album by Finnish group The Gentleman Losers and I was thinking that they might be of interest to some folks here.

I had grown pretty tired of instrumental groups after the post rock torrent, however on first hearing their debut all my misgivings were blown away...this is beautiful music.  To me they sound like the most gorgeous, ancient, dusty horizon country played at 16rpm; all reflected lap steel, heart beat tremolo and radiogram crackle.  I guess comparisons with the instrumentals off Gone To Earth, Warm and Cool Tom Verlaine, late Boards Of Canada and the more clockwork Tom Waits aren't too wide of the mark.

Apparently everything they record is run though a 50's Telefunken mixer and this gives the music a beautiful velveteen texture.

I adore them, I hope others take the time to check them out.

Check them out on Myspace

Check out their website.

Oh I love these guys, a friend gave me their CD sometime last year I think.  I probably listen to it once a week.  :-*

Digging this one up incase anyone fancies a gander at their gorgeously luminescent new elpee 'Permanently Midnight'. They've not released anything for the best part of a decade but this is a great return.

Permanently Midnight Album Teaser

The Gentleman Losers - Permanently Midnight full bandcamping.

If you are wondering what they sound like and can't quite be bothered to click...think a Venn overlap of Daniel Lanois and a dusty clockwork Boards of Canada with a valve glow halo (or maybe Bibio).

Really beautiful stuff.

Thanks for offering this! Though it was nearly a decade ago and I'm just stumbling across this for the first time, I'm enjoying it significantly.

By the way, your manner of describing the sound of an artist or an album never ceases to amaze me: "a dusty clockwork Boards of Canada with a valve glow halo", and "gorgeous, ancient, dusty horizon country played at 16rpm; all reflected lap steel, heart beat tremolo and radiogram crackle" are so exactly spot on that it borderlines creepy, haha.

Absolutely lovely stuff, I'll inevitably be hitting up Bandcamp for their entire catalogue. I'm a big fan of Friends Of Dean Martinez, and can't help but notice an intersection of orbits here (particularly with FODM's mid-late period). I could definitely have them sharing a playlist.
Stuff like this is so welcome, thanks for the rabbit hole! ;)

I really like FODM cover of Wichita Lineman.

Listening to the Gentleman Losers is interesting to me in that they use so many 'classic' sounds and are a reminder of the beauty of many of them but never seem to fall down the historical re-enactment rabbithole and they do a really good job of recontextualizing these sounds in a more contemporary setting.
