HAWKWIND

Post by djetz » Mon Jan 22, 2007 4:36 pm

Specifically Hawkwind up till they kicked out Lemmy in the mid 70s, they kind of lost it after that for me.

1970 - Hawkwind
1971 - In Search of Space
1972 - Doremi Fasol Latido
1973 - Space Ritual
1974 - Hall of the Mountain Grill

Cosmic space rock. Psychedelic proto-punk.

Another one of those bands whose reputation is pretty much a joke, but who were actually great. To those of us in the know - wonderful.

I see them as being closely related to the Krautrock movement, very much comparable to Can and Neu! (Who I also love)

Funny how the krautrock stuff is considered ultra cool but Hawkwind are generally seen as embarrassing hippy rubbish.

Anyone else like 'em?

It's not about the gear! It's about you, your hands, your imagination, your feelings.

They're really really cool, probably one of my favourite bands of that era.

There's an ultra cheap double CD with Doremi and In search of space, plus a bunch of bonus tracks. Probably the best place to start.

Check out the wiki page, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hawkwind - particularly the "Influence" section.

When I lived in Kent I used to work with a guy who played keyboards for them in the 70s for a while.

Apparently most of the musicians in that area at that time were in Hawkwind at some point, or so he said.

Spetcular !!!!! Best song to listen with the mp3 player in the early morning when I go to school lots of stereo panning for lots of fun!! ;D

There's a cool episonde written in Lemmy's biography..
Before to play in the concert that will be Space Ritual (one of the best live album ever) Lemmy had taken so many drugs (mix of amphetamin and  something else to get down the amhpe fx) that he was litteraly locked, so locked that the he asked to the roadie to be drilled to the stage by his boots and to put his bass on him..AMAZING!!

Its hard to imagine him singing with a normal voice but, before his accident, he did. None of that trademark gravel!!
