this new Kim Gordon record
...using the current lingo: SLAPS!
Something I never thought I'd say - Out of all the former SY members Kim Gordon has released the most interesting/relevant/GOOD solo/'side project' album here. I've always been left wanting from Thurston/Lee's other projects. But enough about them:
Kim Gordon – Bye Bye - Live on Jimmy Kimmel
To say I was surprised upon first listen was an understatement.
Any other fans here?
(Obviously this won't be for everybody. Or even...many people )

Re: this new Kim Gordon record
Absolutely loved this, the whole record is gritty and nasty along similar lines. "No Home Record" leans in that direction (e.g. "Paprika Pony") but is more guitary. Huge respect for Kim pushing boundaries 40+ years into her career.
I was lucky enough to see her group performing "No Home Record" a couple of years ago - Sarah Register is a force of nature on her fucked up walnut Mustang. This is from Paris (the whole show used to be on YouTube alas): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=63hAZ80JKwY

It's a good album, even when she sings about buying grocery items

it's go some cool sounds on it. the noisier stuff i really enjoy but the grime/hiphop stuff comes off a bit... "oh you've been listening to stuff in the car with your (grand)kids." which isn't fair, because KG's been broadly and deeply literate musically (also really really cool) for longer than i've been alive.

Jeeze Louise, maybe go back to the SYR with DJ Olive and Ikue Mori, The Whitey Album or even Confusion is Sex and listen to her tracks, speaking over beats has been part of her thing all along. Whatever cool she has, she’s earned ten times over.

I am not a big SY or KG fan but this was pretty interesting for a late-night TV show. I'll go listen to the record and see what else is on there.

Well that's good, you're gonna enjoy yourself! My beef was just with the idea she'd recently appropriated hiphop forms, you definitely did walk back the scepticism.

Re: this new Kim Gordon record
Also count me in the camp of folks were pleasantly surprised. Of all the material SY alumni have released out this pushes the boundaries the hardest, and it's the most surprising because my guess is that KG was least positioned to do it.
As a long time SY fan, I've respected her work with the band but most of the reason why we listened came down to Thurston and Lee's guitars, and my sense is that Thurston was the main driving force on the song writing front. Thurston seems to be keeping that flame going as a solo artist but it's a familiar road now, and he seems to have burned a lot of good will due to personal stuff. KG's sort of known for being "cool" but she's not much of a player, so to me, at least, she seemed least well positioned to do what she's done with this record, so that's an achievement.
That said, most of the heavy lifting on this album is the guy who did the beats, which are the coolest thing on the album. Kim just does what she does, sort of lazy ryhmes and breathy chants and some guitar noise, it's the beats that elevate the whole thing, and I hope the programmer dude gets his due.

Big fan of her solo material, she has been killing it where as Thurston has been writing some great guitar material but his songs about weed and hot girls are killing me, he's like 100 and still a teenager. Lee is amazing but I don't know how I feel about his flare for acoustic stuff as of late.
SY are some of my favorites but the aftermath has been really hit or miss with material.

I used to be cool, now I just complain about prices.

Re: this new Kim Gordon record
Big SY fan here and big fan of Kim. I love the new record. It is somewhat reminiscent of her SYR output, but hits a lot harder.
The music videos have been decent too and star her daughter, Coco, who is an adult now.
Go Kim!
I haven’t enjoyed too much of Thurston’s output, but I did like Lee’s electric work with The Dust.

Sounds more like an east coast of Australia tour. *le sigh*
