Sharon Tate Modern // my band's debut rekkid

Post by epizootics » Wed Feb 07, 2024 11:23 pm

Hey OSG,

Posting this makes me feel like a kid holding a piece of paper and going around saying "HEY LOOK AT MY DRAWING", but what the hell.
My band Sharon Tate Modern released its first record yesterday. Is disco-noise-lounge-rock a genre? I'm hopeless at naming stuff.
The mixing and mastering was done by the former Aussie duo Civil Civic. Binny played bass in STM for a while and I was super glad to get Aaron involved too 'cuz he worked on maybe ten of my favorite albums of all times.

The album is here - https://sharontatemodern.bandcamp.com/album/celebration
There is also a silly music video for the opening track here - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eJtu7dRdxWw

I sing & play guitar and sax. I think I used my Hairmaster (Floyd Rose and all) on the whole thing. My friend Ali Bell did backing vocals on a couple of songs. She used to front the coolest band in Manchester when I lived there in the mid-2010s (Mother). Getting friends involved is always the best part in making a record.

Anyhoo. Hope you like it. :)

I like the single a lot. Really well performed and mixed. I’m going to give the rest a proper listen later.

i really enjoyed this (listened to the whole thing). Getting some serious Nick Cave vibes off some - especially "Suburbs". I hope you take that as the massive compliment it's intended as.

Well done, and good work. You should be proud to show it off :)
Silly Rabbit, don't you know scooped mids are for kids?

Thanks y'all! It was a long process, we just spent six months trying to find a label willing to put it out and ended up releasing it ourselves. The EU music scene has changed a lot in the last ten years, for obvious reasons. Indie labels are dropping like flies in France at the minute.

Aww, I do take that as a compliment :) I have listened to his music enough to feel his songs melting into my DNA. Scott Walker's stuff too.

That video is great! Amazing dance moves. I love "seriously goofy" dancing, so much. I do it to my cats and it seems they don't appreciate it, but at least it holds their attention. The sound is nice and thick, it reminds me of 70s punk / indie production - which is awesome. Nice work!

Haha. Cheers. I blame my older brother. He got me into Iggy and his moves when I was a teenager. We used to go to have the weirdest dance-offs in the clubs in Marseille, some of which were pretty rough back then. We never got beaten up but we did get thrown out many times.
My cat hates it; she runs away as soon as she hears disco music. ;D

And, yeah, Binny did an amazing job with the production & mixing. It was one of those cases where you go "OK, do your thing". He is one of the unsung heroes from the Melbourne scene, possibly because he left for Europe in the early noughties. His solo record from a few years back is one of my favorite albums ever - Golden Anniversary. I learnt a lot of stuff in the process, like how you can keep a mix moving by approaching it in a cinematic way, where anything can come to the foreground (a guitar 'skronk', a pattern on the hats, a synth 'blip', etc.) and move back again. That and the importance of low mids when you want to involve the listener's body. I feel eternally grateful for being surrounded by such a bunch of talented musicians. :)

track two is rad, total control vibe with a bit of something more UK, i dig it.
I used to be cool, now I just complain about prices.
