What bands are truly innovating nowadays?
I was wondering: Are there bands truly innovating these days??
What's something you've been listening that doesn't really sound like anything else or maybe a different approach to an old genre or something?
I've been really into this band called Palm https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6428kmSJhok
I reckon they sound like some other stuff but there's something new going on there (rhythmically at least) I believe.
So yeah!! Recommend me some stuff!

Even though they're painfully hip, Snapped Ankles would (and probably should) be considered innovative. They make their own instruments & bring a certain amount of yeti theatre to their live shows.
We saw them in Eindhoven & while they weren't really my thing, it was hilarious seeing one of them leave the stage & stride around the venue, Gandalf stick in hand, being eagerly followed by a guy with a handi-cam.

You think you can't, you wish you could, I know you can, I wish you would. Slip inside this house as you pass by.

When I read the title the first band I thought of was Palm.
I've listening to some bands mashing up genres.
What i would call "goregaze". One of my favorite releases last year. They also have some industrial tracks on the album.

This band is straight up 90's/early 00's alt rock/grunge in 2016, but they do it so well.

Re: What bands are truly innovating nowadays?
Haven't heard a ton to be honest, but then again I'm more of a song classicist than anything else, so I'm probably not seeking out the most avant garde stuff to begin with.
That being said probably my biggest "whoa, I never thought of that before" moment was seeing this band at the Charm City Artspace in summer of 2010 or so. Melodic hardcore/pop punk band playing with latin rhythms, really really fun. Probably not most people's cup of tea here but I was really impressed with them and they had the room moving. Alas, they pivoted into more standard Springsteen-punk by the next album

My Disco. If nothing else I can't think of any other bands that sound like them.
Any number of the projects Mike Patton is involved with probably fit the criteria too.

MELT DOWNER
One of the many bands of the Austrian Mastermind Wolfgang Möstl - but definitely my favorite!
Have a listen!
https://numavi.bandcamp.com/album/melt-downer
https://numavi.bandcamp.com/album/alter-the-stunt
He's also a dedicated offset lover but also has built himself a surf green double neck SG from a kit - with the 12string neck only on it, as this kit was the cheapest way to get a 12-string neck and now he uses the lower half for some weird synth he built into it...

I need to give them a try. For some reason I thought they were some Mumford and Sons band until I saw the drummer was part of Big Walnuts Yonder

I don't think Andy Shauf sounds like anybody else out there.
Also this and most other Tropical Fuck Storm songs frighten me - they don't do anything quite like anybody else either.

They've been around for 25 years but they've made a ton of truly interesting music (and some not-so-interesting stuff, but that's to be expected for a band that has continually tried new things for this long).Pepe Silvia wrote: ↑Sat Feb 29, 2020 5:24 amI need to give them a try. What album should I start with? I had them on shuffle play on Spotify and it was all over the place.mbene085 wrote: ↑Sat Feb 29, 2020 6:13 pmThey've been around for 25 years but they've made a ton of truly interesting music (and some not-so-interesting stuff, but that's to be expected for a band that has continually tried new things for this long).Pepe Silvia wrote: ↑Sat Feb 29, 2020 5:24 amI need to give them a try. Seconded. I LOVED the last Foxwarren record.
Additionally, I think Big Thief are amazing, and I’m always excited to see what Grizzly Bear are doing next.
The cool thing about fretless is you can hit a note...and then renegotiate.

Re: What bands are truly innovating nowadays?
downy (from japan). been at it 20 years and still sound fresh with every album.
new 'single': https://youtu.be/xNHUhILnoZ4
in fact, i should just make a thread. i've seen one or two mentions while searching OSG for them. singer plays a jazzmaster.
sounds like: dreamy vocals, Atypical drum patterns, strong bass, formerly 2 guitarists (all fender gear) now unfortunately 1 plus a new person on electronics, also, permanent video/visual arts person for all live shows.
