Disappointing lack of backcombing and eyeliner there Mark and it's a great shame your plans and preparation were stymied by mismanagement.
We thought for a brief second about black nail polish & guy/eyeliner, then decided it would the shittest idea ever. Meanwhile the boss was thinking I'd be playing Iron Maiden & White Snake. Incidentally, the black get-up is actually what I wear 90% of the time. Stretchy, airy & you can't see the sweat.

I can't speak to the quality of late 80's goths (i'd already cleaned off the khol by then) but early 80's ones are the only ones worth bothering about anyway. Today's lot seem a baw hair from heavy metal anyway.
A little too early for me although I'm frequently surprised at how early some of these dark/wave/goth tracks are that I keep finding. Really I'm still only just discovering The Cure but, back then, I had Robert Smith to thank for releasing Disintegration just around the time I'd be thinking of paying good money to see The Christians, Level 42 & Terence Trent D'Arby.

One of my old girlfriends in the early 80's had black lace net curtains #gothclass.

I'm good friends with a lady who's got deep connections within the Leipzig goth community & she's been helping me out with tips & suggestions. The conversation's been a lot of fun but this has to be my favourite reply I got from her...

"There’s an internal scene divide about the fetish “ponies” who show up every year..."

Ah it's a different sort of ponygirl than the ones from my days DJing in a fetish club where the dancefloor dressage was more catsuit, harness, heels, bit and feather plume look. Frankly modern goths are fucking rubbish and most of the good and most gothic sounding current bands don't do the dressy up thing anyway and those that do test positive for the heavy metal virus anyway.

Pony Girl < Pony Boy

IMHO, of course.
