Goth music for yoga. Yep....

So, there's a MASSIVE goth event every year in Leipzig - 4 days & around 20,000 people attending.

One of the studios I work in wants to put on 2 events, basically a couple of yoga classes with goth music in the background. I've been roped into hosting one class & would love to come up with a playlist to beat all goth playlists. But, I'm pretty useless when it comes to the genre. I tended to shy away from it, being brought up in Leeds & more into indie guitar stuff.

So, seeing as the last yoga music thread was such a success, let's try again.

What tunes can people suggest, not necessarily downbeat, that would work in such a setting? Dark, atmospheric & moody please :)

Try Coil's "The Ape of Naples" album. Not exactly goth, but they played in Leipzig in 2004, so it seems fitting.

I haven't listen to much of his catalog, but I JUST discovered Author & Punisher: a guy who machines his own interfaces for midi encoding to make industrial doom music. I might look there for some good meditative dirges.

Ignore the fact that goth imagery can be damn ugly.

no doubt david will come along with 30 hours of music for the playlist. i dont have any songs to add but i find it weird how most gothicly inclined people i know actually do yoga.

There is a lot in the 80s 4AD catalogue for you to use. This Mortal Coil (make sure you use this), the early Cocteau Twins, early Clan of Xymox.

Then you have Bauhaus' (Bella Lugosi's Dead), anything from the Cure's Seventeen Seconds, Faith or Pornography releases.
How about the Night Terrors.
Ono Scream?
And a bunch of stuff from the French label that releases Ono Scream, Unknown Pleasures would hit your goth audience.
Thing to remember is goth really came from post punk so there are a lot early post punk stuff that crosses over Joy Division, Cabaret Voltaire, Severed Heads, etc, etc.

There are probably better sources, like David, but this guy is a local Sydney DJ who does a goth/cold wave/post punk show on a small community radio station, with a range of about 5 suburbs, who may provide some inspiration.

Thanks for the links. I'll try'n sift through some of them later.

I think, for the bulk of the playlist at least, that I'll try to keep it as neutral as possible. I'm not after obscure stuff as such & it'd be good if there happened to be suitable tracks from some of the more "classic" goth bands.

This is a list of possible contenders, some of whom may not necessarily be out-and-out goth but have tracks I already feel will fit the bill...

THE CURE, THE BIRTHDAY PARTY, DEPECHE MODE, SIOUXSIE AND THE BANSHEES, BLUE ANGEL LOUNGE, THE CULT, THE DOORS, THIS MORTAL COIL, RED LORRY YELLOW LORRY, DEAD CAN DANCE, BAUHAUS, COCTEAU TWINS, THE CHURCH, CHRISTIAN DEATH, JOY DIVISION, TALES OF MURDER AND DUST, LOVE AND ROCKETS.

Any tracks from these bands spring to mind? Instrumental stuff could be favourable but I'm cool with lyrics, so long as they aren't super-prominent.
