Re: The Mars Volta
I'm not even sure how I got into Mars Volta a bunch of years ago because it's pretty far outside my musical comfort zone, but obviously I was intrigued enough by Deloused that I gave it those extra listens. I think it's a brilliant wild ride of an album that mixes up prog, punk, jazz and something more intangible with utterly non-sensical but pretty poetic lyrics. I think the follow-up album, Frances the Mute, while a bit more traditional psych rock is better in a lot of ways but also less interesting. That said, I never really bothered to listen to any of their other albums.

Deloused at the Comatorium is a stunningly good! One of the greatest psychedelic albums of the last 20 years.
There was absolutely nothing like it when it came out. That blend of latin swagger (check them out on live clips), prog rock & punk was incredible. I was lucky enough to catch them live in Manchester years ago, possibly on tour for the second album but, if I remember correctly, they played pretty much that whole first album, plus other new stuff. They played for 3 hours solid, managing to organise a very peaceful stage invasion in the middle of it. Utterly fucking brilliant!!
There was so much instrumental talent in that band, particularly Omar on lead guitar and Isaiah Owens on keyboard (RIP), not to mention the handful of brilliant drummers they've had over the years.
Funny though, other than giving the second album a few listens I've rarely listened to other more recent stuff.

You think you can't, you wish you could, I know you can, I wish you would. Slip inside this house as you pass by.

Re: The Mars Volta
It was love at first listen for me when Deloused came out. A magical album. After Frances the Mute they sort of disappeared from my radar, but when I years later did some digging, I thought Octahedron, even if it's a bit more approachable, was the true gem of their later works.
But still, none of them compare to the pure genius of Relationship of Command by At the Drive-In.

Oh man the Mars Volta are epic. I dig their whole discography and was lucky enough to see them a couple of times live. Although most folks will probably tell you they lost steam as they went on and although FtM is by far my favorite album I think they were great right up to the end. Each album has it's own thing going on enough to keep my interest and peak my curiosity over multiple listening.
